Shine is back - Welcome to the August 2010 edition

Dear Alumni,

We have finally met!

Well, at least everyone who attended the recent 2010 ICMS Alumni Reunion here in Manly knows now who the alumni team is and what we have in store for you within the next few months. The reunion was a prestigious affair and judging by all the positive feedback we received, a great success. A pleasant autumn evening provided the perfect backdrop to welcome everyone on the College’s front steps with a glass of champagne accompanied by a beautiful sunset. The Great Hall was skilfully decorated with a magnificent chandelier and the engaging entertainment saw many happy feet on the dance floor. You can read more about the reunion here.

As you might have noticed the alumni program is ever growing and to stay on top of things and up-to-date with information we need your help. Please email us your stories, all your successes, achievements or just the little things that brighten up your life to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Make this program your own and share your story with us and your fellow graduates.

Your ICMS Alumni team is busily working on the soon to be launched alumni new website 'ICMS Alumni Online' providing you with the most up-to-date and easy to manage platform to network, discuss and simply stay in touch with your peers and friends from College. So please stay tuned and watch this space.

There is much happening in our Nordic Chapter. We are organising two reunions, one in Oslo and one in Stockholm. If you are around please make time to reunite with other graduates in those beautiful cities. Register your interest.

It seems like the year just flew past the stony walls of the College as it has already been three months since we last released our newsletter. We hope when you read through this edition you will find some inspiring and heart-warming stories that will keep you entertained until we next meet.

Remember to register online, if you haven’t already done so and spread the word about the alumni program.

  • Please take a few minutes to fill in the anonymous Alumni Survey as we would like to know more about our graduate progression.

We want you to be a part of it. Keep in touch.

A message from Mrs Anne-Marie Flynn, Head of Program - Events

It has been a pleasure staying in touch with ICMS alumni over the last few years that I have been teaching at the College. The Event Program commenced in 2004 and it has been very rewarding to see the graduates from the Event Diploma, Associate Degree and Bachelor degrees from 2007, 2008 and 2009 succeed in a diverse range of event jobs across the world. Event alumni literally span the globe from Rio de Janeiro to Brunei, Oslo to London; Shanghai to Johannesburg; New Delhi to Toronto; Sydney to Perth; California to New York; the global network is extensive!

The event programs at ICMS are going from strength to strength also.  The event faculty has increased to ten and our team has a broad experience in all sectors of the event industry. The global financial crisis in 2009 had a significant impact on the industry but 2010 has seen a recovery and event companies are re-hiring and reporting that companies are re-booking conferences and events.

We would love to hear from you and if you wish to stay connected with other event students, please join our designated events students Facebook page. You can network and be informed of graduate job opportunities and also let current students know if your company has any work opportunities.

Best regards,

Anne-Marie Flynn, M.HEd. (MQ)

Alumni Reunion - 2010 ICMS Alumni Reunion, Manly

The 2010 ICMS Alumni Reunion was a great success and only a small taster of what we have in store for you this year. 140 alumni and guests joined together to celebrate in a magnificently lit Great Hall.

The evening started with a welcome reception on the front steps accompanied by a beautiful sunset and a floral glass of sparkling wine followed by a three course sit down dinner in the Great Hall. A group of term five event students played a major part in organising this successful event and managed to attract Chandeliers To Die For to sponsor not only a wonderful chandelier but even a smaller chandelier for a raffle prize. Josephine Lazzaroni was the lucky winner and took away a gorgeous piece of sparkling crystals.

Frank Prestipino, General Manager of ICMS gave a brief insight on the College and the Alumni Relations program. He launched the ICMS Distinguished Alumni Award and announced Kristin Hansen as the winner of this prestigious award. Kristin is very excited about this honour and donated the $1000 prize money to a Cambodian charity, the children’s hospital Jayavaraman VII in Siem Riep. Congratulations once again Kristin for being a model ICMS alumnus.

MC Andreas Rohner introduced the ICMS Alumni Referral program, a reward program for every successfully referred student.
The highlight of the night was the inspiring speech of well known alumnus Ann Kristin Wulf, better known as Wulfy, who talked about her experience working overseas for a Guatemalan orphanage.

After the official part of the night was wrapped up the band MoniQ pumped up the crowd and filled the dance floor with many guests rocking away to well-known beats. The night concluded with an after party at Charlie Bar down in Manly.

Overall the 2010 ICMS Alumni Reunion was a successful step in the development of the ICMS Alumni Relations program and we are looking forward to provide you with many more exciting events and opportunities to stay connected.

Alumni Reunion - London 2010

The recent Cesar Ritz/ICMS reunion at Zeitgeist at ‘The Jolly Gardeners’, London was unfortunately overshadowed by the infamous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in Iceland. Due to disruptions in flights, many confirmed attendance could not escape their contingency duties. Those in attendance, enjoyed the delights of this German Gastro-Pub, sharing stories of college days passed and discussing the joys of life as a Londoner. Sam Jones

ICMS Distinguished Alumni Awards

During the 2010 Alumni Reunion in Manly Frank Prestipino, Managing Director of ICMS launched the ICMS Distinguished Alumni Award program.
This prestigious award will be conferred annually to an ICMS graduate who has distinguished themself in their contribution to business and the community.

Mr Prestipino handed this year’s award over to Kristin Hansen who completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at ICMS before opening her own boutique hotel, the Soria Moria, in Siam Reap, Cambodia, not only running a successful business but also contributing to the sustainable development of tourism in Cambodia.
In 2009 Kristin employed an ICMS industry training student, who completed her nine months of paid industry training at Kristen’s Hotel.
Kristin is very excited about this honour and donated the $1000 prize money to a Cambodian charity, the children’s hospital Jayavaraman VII in Siem Riep. In 2009 alone the hospital treated over 800,000 Cambodian children for free. It is estimated that without the hospital, which operates purely through donations like Kristin’s, an additional 3200 Cambodian children would die each year.

Congratulations once again Kristin for being a model ICMS alumnus.

ICMS Dean, Dr Roger Alexander said. “ICMS now has more than ten years of graduates, many of whom own their own businesses or are in senior management positions. We’re proud of the way our graduates, such as Kristin, are not only business minded, but also see the value of contributing back to their communities.”

Nominations for the 2011 ICMS Distinguished Alumni Award will open in December 2010.

ICMS Alumni continue to shine: Danielle Rivett

After graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business in Tourism & Hotel Management, I started a career in advertising account management. This involved working with a portfolio of clients to achieve effective, integrated marketing campaigns to grow their brands and advertise their products and services across print, online and event mediums. After 2 years in this role, I then started at Voyages Hotels & Resorts as Marketing Coordinator - Ayers Rock and Red Centre in 2008.

Voyages is a unique Australian tourism company which prides itself on offering exceptional holiday experiences that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. At the time I started, the Voyages portfolio included the most amazing resorts in Australia – from Ayers Rock Resort, Longitude 131˚ and Kings Canyon Resort in the Red Centre, to El Questro Wilderness Park in WA, Cradle Mountain Lodge in Tasmania, Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree Rainforest, to 6 beautiful islands on the Great Barrier Reef – Brampton, Lizard, Heron, Wilson, Dunk and Bedarra.

The Red Centre is such a unique part of Australia, and I feel very lucky to have been able to work so closely with it over the past couple of years. I accepted a role as Marketing Executive in 2009, which extended my work across the portfolio to the islands and our Signature resorts. It has been fantastic to gain experience in luxury marketing for our Signature resorts, and also marketing to our strong local market in Queensland for our island resorts.

My day to day duties as Marketing Executive include:

  • Marketing campaign development and management from start to finish
  • Development of all creative material from print and online advertising, to brochures, flyers, sales and Resort collateral
  • Management of our CRM database, and communicating with 70,000 subscribers and past guests via Electronic Direct Mail.
  • Managing the content on the Voyages website
  • Search engine marketing and reporting
  • Event planning and operational management
  • Management of key external partnerships such as Tourism NT, and Tourism Queensland

Voyages has been under a sale environment for the last year, and this has been an challenging but interesting process to go through. Many resorts have been sold to new owners, but we are still very busy operating our largest resort – Ayers Rock Resort, and also Longitude 131˚ in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
I plan on continuing my career in marketing, and my goal is to work my way up to a marketing manager position in a well respected company.

ICMS Alumni continue to shine: Ross Seeger

Colleagues on every continent

Ross Seeger has been a familiar face around campus for quite some time. He came to ICMS in 2006 as an American study abroad student and during that time won the famed HOTS award for successful management of the fictional Phoenix Hotel. Since completing his study abroad term Ross has caught up with many fellow-students in their home countries and remarks on how incredible it is that he now has colleagues on every continent except Antarctica.

The international aspect of the College was reason enough for Ross to return to ICMS to complete his Master of International Business (MIB) here in Manly. He graduated in 2009 having gained the fundamental tools to excel in any organisation dealing with multinational affairs. “I chose the MIB through ICMS and Macquarie University because of the quality of the degree and the chance to study with students from around the world and to further improve my career succession”, Ross says.

Ross has recently established a job as Resident Director for AustraLearn. Within this role Ross plays host to overseas visitors, sources housing for new internship students and provides pastoral care to American and Canadian students who may be experiencing issues associated with studying in a new country. This is a role close to Ross’ heart as he knows what it is like to study in a foreign country, and the issues faced by himself and fellow students while making the transition to a new home even for a short period. He also sees value in supporting educational programs and all facets relating to the cultural experience that study abroad students are seeking. AustraLearn is an American based organisation under the parent banner of Global Links learning abroad.
Lucky Ross not only works in the Manly office but gets to travel to Cairns and other places to support and organise visits of study abroad and intern abroad students, those just like him a few years ago.

College News - The ICMS Green Team

Environmental Sustainability

The International College of Management is nested in a bushland setting on North Head in Manly. The area is home to a plethora of native flora and fauna including the long nose bandicoot and the Little Penguin. ICMS is committed to the environmental sustainability of this precious area and in 2008 was awarded Manly Sustainable Business Awards for Water Use Management and Excellence in Sustainable Business Management.

Environmentally sustainable activities include:

  • sustainability education for students and staff,
  • use of storm water for irrigation, composting of organic waste,
  • recycling programs in classrooms and offices,
  • use of timers on electrical appliances and sensors for lighting,
  • native gardens and vegetation corridors for wildlife,
  • support and assistance with Bandicoot surveys,
  • purchasing local good and services where possible.

Just recently students formed the ‘ICMS Green Team’ to actively raise awareness and make the College a more sustainable place to live, work and study. Students are now being challenged to raise issues of non-sustainable practices and investigate ways to become a more eco-friendly campus.

Typical Green Team Activities

  • Raise awareness about environmental activities on campus
  • Get involved in local environmental activities and events
  • Design solutions to increase sustainable behaviours
  • Play a role in the upcoming Earth Day events

College News - Oration 2010

Dick Smith paid us a visit on March 30, 2010 addressing an audience of more than 180 business people, community leaders, students and academic staff who were gathered for the 7th biennial International College of Management, Sydney Oration. He outlined his journey from car radio installer to Australian Living Treasure.

Dick Smith established Dick Smith Electronics in 1968 and quickly became one of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs. He expanded his business to 50 stores in Australia and New Zealand before selling it in 1982, later founding Dick Smith Foods and Australian Geographic.

“When I began my business I managed using a common exercise book.’ Dick said. ‘I knew it was time to sell when the number of stores exceeded the number of lines in my exercise book.’

Dick now uses the proceeds from his business activities to fund advocacy, adventure and philanthropy. He told the audience to always stand up for what they believe in.
"I'm fortunate that I have been in the position to influence many important causes." Dick said. "I've stood up for what I believe no matter how it impacted on my reputation and I encourage every Australian to do the same."

Dick was selected as the Australian of the Year in 1986 and was named an Australian Living Treasure in 1997.

The ICMS Oration was inaugurated in 1996 to honour the contribution that the College and its alumni make to education, to caring for the needy, to the development of a social conscience and to the general community welfare. Past Orators have included Sir Edmund Hillary and General Peter Cosgrove. The event was organised by ICMS students who are completing one of the practical components of their degree.

Dick concluded his speech talking about his current passion for the future of Australia and our valuable resources given the Australian Government’s plans for population growth. So persuasive has he been that both the left and right of Australian politics and have taken up his argument.
