A job where no two days are the same

Fiona Ngan is not someone who likes to sit still, so, when she was looking for a future career path, a comfortable nine-to-five job was the last thing on her mind.

While she was at school, Fiona dreamed of working in an industry where no two days were ever the same and, when she looked into her options, a career in event management seemed to suit her perfectly.

Fiona chose to study event management at ICMS because she could gain a business degree while she specialised in event management. She was also excited about the chance to integrate industry training into her degree.

“I chose to take some hands-on subjects in my final year of school and found I learned best with practical experience. After spending some time researching my options I found out that the ICMS approach to teaching integrated hands-on, practical learning, with more theoretical studies and I knew it would suit me perfectly.’

During Industry training at New Asia Pacific Travel Fiona had the opportunity to manage the travel plans of over 100 Australians travelling into china for leisure, educational and cultural purposes as well as multiple high school and leisure groups group. Fiona was determined to take advantage of the broad range of experience she could gain while working in a small company.

“I am making the most of every opportunity that industry training brings me,” Fiona said. “I work in a small office and so my duties aren’t limited by my title. I treat every task as a learning experience and an opportunity to expand my skills and my knowledge of the industry.”

Alongside her primary role as a Travel Services Coordinator, Fiona has taken on the roles of Sales Coordinator, Outbound Travel Consultant, Events Assistant and Marketing Assistant and her every day duties, which range from personal assistant and reception duties to project management, mean she never has the chance to get bored.

Fiona ranks her biggest achievement while on industry training as winning accreditation which allowed the company to expand business in the outback. “This project took over 6 months,” Fiona said. “And I can thank the education I received at ICMS for providing me with practical skills and knowledge that became the foundations of success.”

After she graduates, Fiona will spend some time gaining more experience in the events industry, building it alongside a career in sales or public relations. Highly ambitious, Fiona hopes to have started her own company by the time she’s 30.
