Academic integrity, put simply, means being honest in your academic life. ICMS is committed to and promotes integrity across all departments and as students, you need to be fully aware of academic acknowledgement and attribution.

Referencing

All assignments that have information from external sources need to be correctly referenced. Referencing is the process of acknowledging the original author of a piece of research used in your assignment. If you do not do this it is likely that you will be penalised. This is known as plagiarism and is looked upon very seriously by educational institutions. You therefore need to learn how to correctly reference in ICMS.

APA referencing

ICMS uses APA referencing and no other type of referencing. If you are unsure about APA referencing, or have never referenced before, you will need to either check the style guide, Moodle or make an appointment with D Hurlow in the Centre for Teaching and Learning. This can be done by emailing him on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

If you copy and paste paragraphs or even single sentences from a book or website without acknowledging the original author or source this is considered plagiarism and as a result you will not be practicing academic integrity.

Being able to research is a fundamental part of your studies. You are encouraged to read/research widely and to be aware of secondary research on your selected topic. This process involves correctly acknowledging that you have used someone else’s ideas/views in your research.

ICMS Plagiarism Policy

Please refer to the 2011 ICMS Plagiarism policy to assist you in understanding our rules and expectations.
