English & Grammar Assistance 

Good grammar is essential in all areas of study.  From writing an academic paper to presenting in class, proper grammar will help you get your point across in a clear way and demonstrate your level of understanding of the material.  The following documents highlight some common grammatical errors and include helpful hints to avoid making these mistakes in your own writing and conversation.  

It is very difficult in English to learn when to use ‘A’, ‘An’ or ‘The’.  This attachment will help you learn how to use articles properly. 

If you are confused about singular, plural, collective, countable and uncountable nouns, this worksheet will help you pick the right noun. 

Many students find learning verb endings very difficult. This worksheet will help you remember when to use various endings. 

English assistance is available through the Centre (written, spoken, comprehension). If you are experiencing English difficulties we suggest you visit the Pollard Centre (library) each day. The Head of ALC is also an English teacher and is available to assist you with any challenges. Please contact the Centre or visit the us to make an appointment

Below are some helpful suggestions to improve your English language skills:

  • Read newspapers, journals and magazines for 30 minutes every day;
  • Use the Syndicate Rooms to study with friends;
  • Make an appointment with us and complete grammar drills to improve speaking and listening skills.

The above site has many different exercises for beginning to intermediate practice. You will use readings to answer relevant questions and then complete listening exercises with questions

The above site is simple to read and has good examples and notes. You are able to print off the exercises and can access the answers to self correct.
