International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Deputy Vice Chancellor: Learning and Teaching Dr Margot McNeill is part of a four-member team which will lead a national series of workshops aimed at preserving academic integrity within the Australian higher education sector. The initiative is funded by Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).
From the end of October until early 2020, workshops will be held in metropolitan and key regional centres. Available to all universities and independent higher education providers, the workshops and accompanying toolkit aim to promote good practices and build a sector-wide culture of academic integrity.
“Academic integrity is critical to every aspect of education and breaches of academic integrity are raising concerns about the international reputation of higher education in Australia,” a statement released by the organisers said.
Contract cheating as a practice, in particular, will be examined as an issue and methods discussed on how to combat this rising threat to the reputation of Australian qualifications.
The issue of contract cheating has recently escalated to the Federal Government where proposed legislation will make it an offence to provide or advertise contract cheating services. Those providing these services could face up to two years’ jail time and fines of up to $210,000.
Dr McNeill, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, will be joined by international expert in academic integrity and ethics, UniSA’s Associate Professor Tracey Bretag, in partnership with Dr Guy Curtis, University of Western Australia; and Dr Christine Slade, University of Queensland.
TEQSA’s academic integrity workshops will help higher education providers with measures to promote academic integrity, strategies to overcome barriers to create a culture of integrity, practices to prevent contract cheating, and evidence-based approaches to respond effectively to all academic integrity breaches through policy and procedural frameworks.
In addition to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) specialising in Educational Technologies and Assessment from Macquarie University, Dr McNeill also holds a Master of Education (E-Learning) from the University of Southern Queensland and a Master of Arts from Macquarie University. Currently DVC: Learning and Teaching at ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, Sydney, NSW, Dr McNeill has received several prestigious grants for learning and teaching research projects, and has been honoured in 2017 at the TEQSA conference with the Best Paper Award, co-authored by Maria Spies.
