International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) student Jack Johns is currently juggling his Bachelor of Sports Management degree with a fledgling professional rugby career.

Johns, son of Rugby League legend Matthew (Matty) Johns, is the winner of the 2016 ICMS-New South Wales Rugby League Scholarship, and has been signed to play for the Newcastle Knights.

The Newcastle Knights are an Australian professional Rugby League Football Club based in Newcastle, New South Wales. They compete in Australasia’s premier rugby league competition, the NRL premiership.

ICMS is based in Manly, NSW. Johns and the college have come to an arrangement where he will complete industry training while away playing rugby and training in Newcastle, and will return to the Manly campus to continue his sports management studies when the time is right.

Johns chose to study sports management while training with the Manly U20s squad, and ICMS was a natural choice for him.

“I had finished my Year 12 studies and decided to study sports management as sport has been a large part of my life. Through the ICMS advertising and recommendations from some friends already at the college, I then decided to go through and apply for the scholarship,” he said.

Real work experience is built in to every ICMS study path, and Johns is currently doing his industry training part time at the Newcastle Knights offices in various departments, from ticketing and membership to corporate sales and sponsorship.

“I see myself gaining all the necessary skills that will be needed in operating within or managing a workplace or sports business,” he said.

And to any student thinking of choosing ICMS as a place to study, he added: “I would say to any prospective students that the campus is a great environment to study in a world class location. ICMS also offers various options of help along the way.”

As for following in his famous father’s footprints, Johns hasn’t let the pressure get to him.

“My mum and dad have always kept things normal in mine and my brothers’ lives. Dad being well known hasn’t ever affected that.”
