Business owner Irvan Gunawan misses surfing at Manly Beach before class at ICMS, but is proud to have started his own cafe in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Irvan Gunawan graduated from his Hospitality Management studies at ICMS in 2009. He’s now the owner of the Monopole café in Surabaya, Indonesia.

When asked what career achievements he is especially proud of, Irvan says: “Starting my own business and having a group of young employees who are like family.”

“ICMS gave me the opportunity to work in food and beverage during my industry training. This helped me realise that I belong in the food and beverage industry.”

After completing his high school studies in Sydney, Irvan was drawn to ICMS due to its renowned Industry Training program. It’s a decision he is glad for. ‘It was a wonderful and unique experience,” he says.

Irvan undertook his industry training placement at Sheraton on the Park, Sydney. “I was a bartender in the lounge at Sheraton on the Park, Sydney. I worked for about nine months there and the internship opened my mind to the world.

“I learnt how to make cocktails and coffee, and that I belonged to the food and beverage industry. I also used my earnings at industry training to pay for two terms of my tuition fees. More importantly, it allowed me to understand how employees feel and how to manage them,” he adds.
