John Shanahan is on the Academic Board at the International College of Management, Sydney.

John is an auditing and accounting consultant who prepares expert reports. He was formerly a Partner of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and the auditor of several Australian and international listed companies including Accor Asia pacific and Vodafone. 

He worked as part of an international project team in the U.S. on the development of Deloitte's audit methodology. He also worked for three years as lead consultant on an AusAid project to develop an audit methodology and training program for the China National Audit Office in the People’s Republic of China. 

He has conducted training courses for the Australian National Audit Office, the Audit Office of NSW, the Queensland Audit Office, the South Australian Auditor-General’s Office, the Federal Judicial Commission, ASIC and the Australian Taxation Office. He was a lecturer in Accounting at the University of Canberra and University of NSW. He has been a Visiting Lecturer in Auditing at both the University of Sydney and Macquarie University. He was an Adjunct at Macquarie Graduate School of Management and lectured in the M.Com. program at Sydney University 9. 

He has acted as an auditing expert in applications by ASIC before the Companies Auditors & Liquidators Disciplinary Board and was an investigator for the South Australian Auditor-General in the inquiry into the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia and prepared an expert’s report for the HIH Royal Commission. 

He was Deputy Chancellor of Southern Cross University for three years, Chair of the University’s Audit & Risk Committee for six years and Deputy Chair of the Finance Committee for six years. He remains a member of the University’s Audit & Risk Committee. He is a Director of Summerland Credit Union and Chair of Summerland’s Board Audit and a member of Summerland’s Risk Committee. 

He was an author of the study A Financial Analysis of Universities’ Financial Statements 1993 to 1996 carried out the Department of Education and was an adviser to the Federal Government on changes to reporting guidelines for Australian universities for five years. 

He served on the editorial board of Butterworth’s Australian Corporations Law reporter service. He is the author of the textbooks Guide to Accounting Standards (9th ed.) and Guide to Accounting Regulation (3rd ed.) and the CCH text Leasing in Australia ... the Accounting and Taxation Implications. He wrote a monthly technical column for CFO Magazine and has written on accounting issues for the Australian Financial Review and BRW magazine. He formerly wrote a weekly accountancy column for Australian Business magazine.
