ICMS has developed a unique internship program allowing you to combine your Study Abroad experience with an internship. This is the perfect opportunity to gain exposure to an international work environment while you study.
You have the option of an internship for credit or a one trimester internship.
Option 1: Internship for Credit
During your 1 or 2 trimester study abroad program you may apply to undertake an internship for credit. This can be completed in two ways. You can elect to take your 4 academic subjects as per normal in your study abroad program and then opt to take the internship as a 5th subject or you can elect to take 3 academic subjects and have the internship count as equivalent to your 4th subject.
Which option you choose will depend on your home University’s study abroad & internship requirements. You must seek approval from your home University first for either option.
This internship is equivalent to 1 academic subject of 3 credit points. So if you enrol in your normal study abroad load of 4 academic subjects worth 12 credit points and then add on this Internship as your 5th subject you will have a total of 15 credit points.
This internship will involve 10 hours per week in a Sydney based company completing a set task or project as assigned by the employer. There is also an academic component to this internship which involves weekly journals, final project and a final presentation.
Entry Requirements: Meet the standard study abroad program entry requirements plus have a GPA of 3.0. No previous work experience or internship necessary. You can be from any major to apply for this internship.

The study abroad package price includes a maximum of 4 subjects. You can take the internship for credit as one of these subjects. So you could take 3 academic subjects and 1 internship for credit that will count as your fourth subject. If you choose to take the internship this way then there will be no extra charge on top of your study abroad package price. If you decide you would like to do your 4 academic subjects as per normal in your study abroad package and take the internship for credit as a fifth subject then you will need to pay an extra AUD$2650. This is the current 2015 price for a 3 credit point subject.
The internship for credit is equivalent to 1 academic subject at ICMS and is worth 3 ICMS credit points. So if you take the internship as your fifth subject you will gain a total of 15 ICMS credit points for your study abroad trimester. Credit points in your country may vary, please consult your University or Program provider if you are unsure.
When you apply for the study abroad program you can also tick on the application form that you would like to take an internship for credit. You need to include your resume and have a grade point average of 3.0/4.0 This translates to an approximate average of about 80% out of 100%. You will also need to fill in the Internship for Credit Interest Form. This will be made available to you after you apply for the Study Abroad program.
You could be placed in ICMS itself completing a project for one of our many departments or you may be placed in a Manly/Sydney based company. Most students are placed off campus in a company or Hotel that is related to your area of study.
You could be working on some of the following types of projects: marketing plans, strategic plans, company research, assisting with functions/events, sales plans and many more.
ICMS will find different internship projects and then we will try to match each eligible student that applies for the internship for credit to a project. This can be started whilst you are still in your home country, however an internship cannot be confirmed until you successfully passed an interview with the company you are going to intern with. This interview will take place either over the phone before you arrive or during your first few weeks in Sydney.
The majority of our one trimester internships will be paid, however we cannot guarantee payment during your internship. In Australia the Hospitality, Events and Tourism Industry does pay well, but payment generally depends on your previous work experience and skill level. Minimum wage in Australia is approximately AUD$18 per hour so if we do source you a paid internship you will earn enough money to help with your living costs. If we do not source you a paid internship you will still work in an industry related to your study and gain valuable international work experience.
