ICMS has developed a unique internship program allowing you to combine your Study Abroad experience with an internship. This is the perfect opportunity to gain exposure to an international work environment while you study.
You have the option of an internship for credit or a one trimester internship.
Option 1: Internship for Credit
During your 1 or 2 trimester study abroad program you may apply to undertake an internship for credit. This can be completed in two ways. You can elect to take your 4 academic subjects as per normal in your study abroad program and then opt to take the internship as a 5th subject or you can elect to take 3 academic subjects and have the internship count as equivalent to your 4th subject.
Which option you choose will depend on your home University’s study abroad & internship requirements. You must seek approval from your home University first for either option.
This internship is equivalent to 1 academic subject of 3 credit points. So if you enrol in your normal study abroad load of 4 academic subjects worth 12 credit points and then add on this Internship as your 5th subject you will have a total of 15 credit points.
This internship will involve 10 hours per week in a Sydney based company completing a set task or project as assigned by the employer. There is also an academic component to this internship which involves weekly journals, final project and a final presentation.
Entry Requirements: Meet the standard study abroad program entry requirements plus have a GPA of 3.0. No previous work experience or internship necessary. You can be from any major to apply for this internship.
Option 2: One Trimester Internship
This 1 Trimester Internship is available to students completing the 2 trimester study abroad program at ICMS. Instead of taking 2 trimesters of academic study you can apply to take 1 trimester of academic study and your 2nd trimester can be a full time internship. This option is great for students that need to complete an internship for their home University degree or for students that want to gain international work experience in their field of study.
During your 1st trimester of academic study, ICMS will assist you with your professional performance. This will equip you with the business skills, interview techniques, resume building and the industry professional standards you require to be successful in your internship. ICMS will also ask you to register for the Australian Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate during your 1st trimester at ICMS. This is a 1 day course with final exam that must be completed during your 1st trimester. No credit points will be listed on your ICMS transcript for this internship, however it will show on your transcript as satisfactory or fail.
Entry Requirements: Meet the standard study abroad program entry requirements. You need to have completed 600 hours of previous internship or work experience, related to your field of study. You must be a Hospitality, Tourism, Business or Event Management major to apply for this internship. Internships for other related majors are available but you should contact ICMS before applying. You must also complete the RSA program at ICMS during your 1st trimester of academic study if you plan to intern in the Hospitality/Events/Tourism industry.

The study abroad package price includes a maximum of 4 subjects. You can take the internship for credit as one of these subjects. So you could take 3 academic subjects and 1 internship for credit that will count as your fourth subject. If you choose to take the internship this way then there will be no extra charge on top of your study abroad package price. If you decide you would like to do your 4 academic subjects as per normal in your study abroad package and take the internship for credit as a fifth subject then you will need to pay an extra AUD$2650. This is the current 2015 price for a 3 credit point subject.
The internship for credit is equivalent to 1 academic subject at ICMS and is worth 3 ICMS credit points. So if you take the internship as your fifth subject you will gain a total of 15 ICMS credit points for your study abroad trimester. Credit points in your country may vary, please consult your University or Program provider if you are unsure.
When you apply for the study abroad program you can also tick on the application form that you would like to take an internship for credit. You need to include your resume and have a grade point average of 3.0/4.0 This translates to an approximate average of about 80% out of 100%. You will also need to fill in the Internship for Credit Interest Form. This will be made available to you after you apply for the Study Abroad program.
You could be placed in ICMS itself completing a project for one of our many departments or you may be placed in a Manly/Sydney based company. Most students are placed off campus in a company or Hotel that is related to your area of study.
You could be working on some of the following types of projects: marketing plans, strategic plans, company research, assisting with functions/events, sales plans and many more.
ICMS will find different internship projects and then we will try to match each eligible student that applies for the internship for credit to a project. This can be started whilst you are still in your home country, however an internship cannot be confirmed until you successfully passed an interview with the company you are going to intern with. This interview will take place either over the phone before you arrive or during your first few weeks in Sydney.
The internship placement fee for this one trimester internship is AUD$1500. This must be paid when you pay for your first trimester study abroad package fee. This fee includes placement charges and overseas student health cover for your second semester.
The majority of our one trimester internships will be paid, however we cannot guarantee payment during your internship. In Australia the Hospitality, Events and Tourism Industry does pay well, but payment generally depends on your previous work experience and skill level. Minimum wage in Australia is approximately AUD$18 per hour so if we do source you a paid internship you will earn enough money to help with your living costs. If we do not source you a paid internship you will still work in an industry related to your study and gain valuable international work experience.
You could be placed in the following areas for your one trimester internship: food & beverage, functions, events, concierge, front desk, tour desk, tour guide, housekeeping, marketing, administration, service management and many more. Most Hospitality, Events or Tourism related positions would be in a 4-5 star hotel. Most Business related positions would be interning for a company based in Manly or Sydney. All positions are entry level only.
When you apply for the study abroad program you can also tick on the application form that you would like to take the extra one trimester internship. You must also submit your resume, reference from your previous employer proving you have 600 hours of previous work experience and the one trimester internship interest form.
The careers services team at ICMS will work with you during your study abroad trimester to find a suitable internship placement for you. Once they find you something they will introduce the position to you to see if you are interested and they will also send your details to the company to see if they are interested in interviewing you. If they are you will go for an interview like you would for any other internship or job. You must be successful in the interview to gain the employment of the company. ICMS will help you as much as we can so that you are successful in your interview. We will help you with your grooming, attitude, resume building, interview techniques etc, but we cannot guarantee you this one trimester internship as you must pass the interview yourself. If you are unlucky after 3 interviews it will be up to you to find your own placement and if successful this placement must be approved by the Career Services team.
No you don’t have to stay in Sydney. ICMS has partner hotels all over Australia. Most Business roles will be in Sydney. If you are interested in interning in another part of Australia then you can talk with the ICMS careers services team during your first trimester of study abroad. They will do their best to source you an internship position in another part of Australia. This cannot be guaranteed but is possible.
This will depend on the company you are placed in. Sometimes they need students to start straight away and other times they may allow you to have a break between finishing your study abroad trimester and starting your one trimester internship. You will need to be flexible and adhere to when the company wants you to commence your internship. Do not plan to take any leave after your final exam at ICMS.
This will depend on what country you are from and what visa requirements you have. You will need to check this with the immigration department. You may also need to check with your home University or an ICMS representative in your country.
We would like for your previous experience to be related to your field of study. But in this example above a student’s major is Tourism and they have worked in a retail shop for 600 hours. We would consider this very good customer service experience which is an essential part of Tourism. So in this case YES we would accept the previous work experience. If you think you have the required work experience the best thing will be to apply for the one trimester internship and we will assess your previous work and let you know if we can accept you into the program.
Unfortunately the answer is No. This one trimester internship is really designed to get more experience in your area of study, so you need to have at least 600 hours of previous work experience or internship experience. If you have less than 600 hours experience then you might like to apply for the internship for credit option during your study abroad trimester
We will start looking at places for you to intern during your study abroad trimester. You may go to one interview and be successful or two or three before you are successful. ICMS prides ourselves on matching students to internships that are deemed the most suitable for both the student and the company. After 3 interviews if you are unsuccessful it will then be up to you to find your own one trimester internship or to go back to your home country.
