Subject Rationale:

Effective financial management is of paramount importance for any business to survive and grow. It is essential for professional accountants to have technical knowledge and skills to support financial decision making within a business. The subject discusses the role and purpose of the financial management, financial management environment, fundamental principles and techniques underpinning financial decision making, including dealing with uncertainty and risk. A focus of this subject is on the application of a range of quantitative measures to solve complex financial problems and to assist in making optimal financing, investing and dividend policy decisions.

The principles underlying the valuation of business and financial assets, including the impact of cost of capital on the value of business will be also covered. Students will have an opportunity to research the latest trends and technologies in financial management, including the use of machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain technologies.

Learning Outcomes:

a) Assess the working capital needs of a business and formulate funding strategies to address those needs.

b) Employ capital budgeting techniques to critically analyse proposed investment alternatives, adjust for risk and uncertainty and recommend the most suitable alternative in given business scenarios.

c) Critically evaluate alternative sources of business finance, determine associated cost of capital and communicate capital structure recommendations to key business stakeholders.

d) Apply the principles of business and asset valuation to specific business scenarios.

e) Critically evaluate payout policies and their impact on the financial position of a business.

f) Evaluate the role of financial modelling in long term financial planning and discuss the latest trends and technologies in financial management.
