Subject Aim:

With constantly evolving business practices in a knowledge-driven and technologically mediated operating context, it is crucial that managers and business owners have advanced knowledge and technical skills to initiate innovative change. This is especially the case in the highly competitive and dynamic hospitality sector. Furthermore, managers must possess critical thinking and analytical skills to inform strategic management decisions. You will collaborate in teams to review theoretical frameworks and implement operational decisions.

The aim of this subject is to provide you with a business simulation experience that reinforces critical thinking and contemporary management decision-making skills. This will be facilitated through the Hotel Operations, Tactics and Strategy Simulation (HOTS) program where you will, in teams, be challenged to operate a hotel business for a simulated period of three years. You will be challenged to exercise judgement and optimise organisational outcomes by responding to different business scenarios and reviewing and responding to the outcomes of the decisions and actions implemented over the duration of this subject. Furthermore, you will study key theories and concepts underpinning revenue and yield management in order to develop strategic plans within the context of contemporary hotel and hospitality management.

Learning Outcomes:

a) Critically evaluate the theoretical concepts and strategic considerations underpinning hotel operations.
b) Analyse and interpret financial and socio-economic data to inform evidence-based managerial decisions supporting a business plan.
c) Construct and effectively communicate the tactical and strategic management decisions central to tourism and hospitality business environments
d) Appraise the effectiveness of business decisions made in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.
