Subject Rationale:
This subject focuses on the responsibilities and respective roles of directors and organisational stakeholders and provides knowledge on corporate governance within an organisation in the broad context of the agency theories and relationships. It expands on the fundamentals of accountancy and auditing as a support and control functions. Through a combination of theoretical approaches and business case studies, students will expand their strategic thinking, visioning and leadership capability.
The topics addressed include ethics, corporate governance, social responsibility and professional values as applied in the context of the accountants’ duties and responsibilities in the advisory and senior consultancy capacities, as well as the guide to appropriate professional behaviour and conduct in a variety of situations. In addition, the subject critically examines internal control, compliance issues relating to decision-making and decision support function as well as risk controls. Students will also learn process design and project management and learn how to hold the vision, elicit the alignment and ownership of the stakeholders and effectively manage changes and deepen the capacity to apply the art and craft of business leadership.
The subject is aligned to and will prepare students for the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) Strategic Business Leader Exam.
a) Adopt best practices to manage the performance and value creation and apply a range of professional skills to evaluate the requirements of a strategic leader.
b) Evaluate the effectiveness of the governance and agency system of an organisation and recognise the responsibility of the board or other agents towards their key stakeholders.
c) Critically assess the strategic position of the organisation against its evolving external environment and the availability of internal resources to identify feasible strategic options.
d) Critically evaluate the risk profile of the organisation and of any strategic options identified.
e) Select and apply appropriate information technologies and data analytics tools to analyse factors affecting the organisation’s value chain.
f) Exhibit innovative thinking, applying best-practice strategies to manage disruptive technologies, change and to initiate, lead and organise projects.
