Subject Aim:

The aim of this subject is to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of purchasing and supply chain management in retail organisations. It provides the theory as well as practical applications of the buying and retail logistics. Topics considered include: Introduction to Purchasing and Supply Chain Management and Retail Environment, The Purchasing Process & Purchasing Policy and Procedures, Supply Management Integration and Organisation and Category Strategy Development, Supplier Evaluation, Selection and Quality Management, Purchasing and Supply Chain Analysis Tools, Negotiation and Conflict Management, Inventory, Transportation and Lean Supply Chain Management, Information Technology and Integrated Supply Management, Performance Management and Evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explain the purchasing process and its relationship to supply chain management.
  2. Analyse how to identify a suitable supplier and evaluate supplier quality.
  3. Discuss purchasing and supply chain analysis tools and information technology.
  4. Understand how to effectively manage negotiation and conflict in the supply management.
  5. Identify ways to manage and improve inventory, transportation and supply chain network.
  6. Implement a Performance Measurement and Evaluation.

Student Assessment:

Exams will take place in weeks 12 & 13. Please refer to the official Exam Timetable for further information.

Students are required to prepare for assessments by reading subject matter in subject notes, handouts and readings. Class work and practical application of theory assist in reinforcing this material.
