Subject Aim:

  • Articulate the importance of an holistic understanding of corporate and functional strategy.
  • Assess the competitive rivalry, behaviour and dynamics within industries.
  • Analyse the internal resources, capabilities and core competencies to determine competitive advantage.
  • Analyse dimensions of the external environment that may affect the firm’s strategic plans.
  • Apply strategy implementation techniques including outcome monitoring and evaluation.
  • Explain the importance of strategic leadership and entrepreneurship.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Critically evaluate and analyse organisation’s internal resources/capabilities and the external environment to identify factors that may affect their strategic plans.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking to assess the competitive dynamics and rivalry within industries.
  3. Develop scenarios for an organisation’s future plans together with functional and corporate level strategies designed to achieve superior performance.
  4. Explain the importance of strategy development, strategic leadership and entrepreneurship.
  5. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the importance of evaluation, implementation and monitoring of formulated strategies.

Student Assessment:

Exams will take place in weeks 12 & 13. Please refer to the official Exam Timetable for further information.

Assessment One- Individual Report

This Assessment will challenge students to focus on the business in the Case Study and by applying critical thinking skills and using the theoretical concepts and frameworks outlined in the course, create strategic development options for that business going forward.

This Assessment contributes 30% to the Final Grade for the course.

Assessment Two – Group Report and Presentation

The purpose of this Assessment is for students to be able to research and analyse the existing strategy from a company of their choosing and further, assume the role of recently appointed CEO for that organisation and by applying critical thinking skills to the theories and concepts outlined in the course, recommend a Strategic Plan for the development of that business over the next 12 months.

This Assessment contributes 20% to the Final Grade for the course.

Final Examination

A two hour Final Examination held in Week 12 contributes 50% to the Final Grade for the course.
