How does Work Integrated Learning work?

ICMS has a dedicated office to support you as you complete the ICMS Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. This ensures you get the most out of the experience and are best prepared for future career success. They know what they’re doing – they prepare and place up to 600 students per year as part of the WIL program.

Here’s how the WIL professional placement program works. Students complete it in two stages:

Stage 1: Preparation

In the study period prior to your WIL professional placement, you’ll complete the Professional Placement Preparation Program.

What to expect:

  • Complete the Professional Placement Preparation Program module on Moodle (our student Learning Management System).
  • Attend workshops, receive mentoring and participate in mock scenarios that prepare you for your professional placement.
  • Update or prepare your resume, create or update your LinkedIn profile, and learn about expected behaviour in the workplace.
  • Practise your job interview skills.

Your Professional Placement Consultant will work with you to choose and facilitate an interview with an industry partner that best suits your interests, skills and talents. This sets you up for the next stage – your professional placement.

The Iconic Professional Placement

Stage 2: Professional Placement

Your professional placement might take you to a major city, a regional area in Australia, or even overseas. You’ll be supported at every step, with continual coaching from your ICMS Professional Placement Consultant. They’ll provide ongoing mentorship, evaluation and assessment support to ensure you get the most out of the experience.

Your professional placement may go for two consecutive study periods, including the term break, which means you could gain up to nine months of professional placement experience before you graduate (minimum of 600 hours).

The WIL professional placement program is part of your degree, which means that international students are eligible to work full time (up to 38 hours per week) during their professional placement and term breaks too.
