Professional Attire

On occasion throughout the study period, and during trimester breaks, students may be permitted to wear smart casual attire.

Smart casual attire includes:

• professional, but relaxed, separates
• relaxed jacket (optional)
• smart, unfrayed jeans
• neat shirt/blouse/top
• polished, practical footwear
• items with minimal logos and branding.

Smart casual attire should be appropriate for ICMS’s diverse community and must not display any political, religious or offensive statements/language.

The following items of clothing are not considered professional attire:

• jeans
• t-shirts, polo shirts or tank tops
• board shorts
• mini-skirts
• shorts
• open-toed shoes or sandals
• sneakers
• outlandish pieces of jewellery
• casual dresses
• sheer or cropped tops
• singlets
• ripped or frayed clothing
• ill-fitting clothing or clothing that exposes the midriff
• active or beach wear.

Professional attire can be purchased from many stores to suit your budget and style. You might like to look in department stores (such as  Myer, David Jones, Target and Big W) or clothing stores (such as Connor, Zara, Uniqlo, Cotton On, Witchery, Country Road and Witchery).

No, it doesn’t have to be a matching jacket. You can wear a jacket that coordinates with your clothes.

Your professional attire can be any colour.

Shoes should be in good condition with a closed toe.  You should not wear sandals, thongs, joggers or sneakers to class.

Yes, we encourage you to wear a jacket at ICMS. However, on hot/humid days (for example, when the temperature is above 25 degrees Celsius or days with higher humidity), you may remove your jacket.

A professional shirt/blouse/top, usually collared, buttoned and tucked in, is appropriate.

T-shirts, polo shirts, tank tops, crop tops, sheer tops and ripped tops are not appropriate.

Yes, minimal jewellery, accessories and ties may be worn.

Outlandish jewellery does not constitute business attire. ICMS will make an exception to these guidelines if a student has a medical condition or a dress requirement that relates to their religion.

No, it doesn’t but it should be clean and tidy.

Professional attire is the primary dress code for students (and ICMS staff).

Professional attire must be worn at the following times:

• during all face-to-face and online teaching and learning activities (including exams)
• in all public areas from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm
• for open days and promotional events
• on ICMS-led excursions
• when representing ICMS on business.
