Aussie Rugby Star Inspires at ICMS Masterclass

Over 80 students packed the room to learn practical communication skills from Australian Wallaroo and rugby star Layne Morgan, alongside ICMS lecturer and communication expert  Darren Coughlan, at the recent  Communication Cookbook: Recipes for Success  masterclass.  

Held at the ICMS Northern Beaches Campus, the masterclass offered students the chance to gain practical strategies, hear real-world stories, and take part in activities designed to build confidence and clarity. 

Layne’s Perspective: Focus on the Next Job

Layne, known for her quick thinking as a Test Match scrumhalf, shared how the lessons she’s learned on the rugby field translate seamlessly into the workplace. 

Her ‘Zoom In, Zoom Out’ method was a standout takeaway for students. 

“When you zoom out, you realise that what feels overwhelming is just a small speck in the grand scheme of things,” Layne explained.  

“It’s all about staying present and focused on the next job.” 

Layne’s authenticity and energy made her stories relatable and inspiring, leaving students with actionable insights they could apply immediately. 

Darren’s Expertise: Practical Communication

Darren brought his deep experience in communication training to the session, guiding students through interactive challenges like elevator pitch exercises and group activities. 

“Watching this Wallaroos star connect with our students was pure magic,” Darren said of the event. “Her ability to translate high-performance mindsets into practical workplace skills was phenomenal.” 

Together, Layne and Darren created a dynamic learning environment that was both fun and impactful.
