From ICMS to Marriott: The Voyage Begins

From ICMS to Marriott: The Voyage Begins

September 9, 2025

ICMS graduate Rhiannon Smith has been selected for the Marriott Voyage Program, a global leadership development initiative for the hospitality industry.

The program is a significant step in her career, but it’s one that was built on the strong foundation she developed during her time at ICMS.

ICMS: The Launchpad for Success

Rhiannon’s journey at ICMS began in 2023 when she moved to Manly to study a Bachelor of Hospitality Management

Over nearly two years, she immersed herself in campus life and took full advantage of the opportunities ICMS offered.

“I got my first hotel job through an ICMS career fair, at the Sydney Harbour Marriott,” Rhiannon said.

“That opened the door to hands-on experience in the industry while I was still studying.”

Her time at ICMS was packed with achievements.

She volunteered as a student ambassador, completed an internship at Cartier, made the Dean’s List twice, and represented both ICMS and Australia at the Young Hospitality Summit in Switzerland

“Each of these experiences challenged me in different ways and helped me grow, not just professionally, but personally,” she said.

Living on campus with international students and working across different roles gave her a global perspective and helped her build confidence.

“Being surrounded by inspiring lecturers and peers made my time at ICMS truly unforgettable,” she added.

Why Marriott Voyage?

Rhiannon’s curiosity and drive to grow led her to apply for the Marriott Voyage Program, which offers a structured pathway for career development in hospitality.

“I’ve always wanted to understand how things work and why things happen,” she said.

“This program pushes me out of my comfort zone and gives me the chance to grow faster and more intentionally.”

Despite initial doubts about her experience level, Rhiannon was thrilled to be selected.

“I was shocked but excited,” she said. “It’s a huge learning opportunity and a chance to challenge myself.”

She’s particularly excited about the opportunities for growth and development.

“I know it’s going to be challenging, but that’s what excites me,” she said.

“I’m stepping into a hotel that’s bold, modern, and unlike anywhere I’ve worked before. I can’t wait to learn from mentors from around the world, be part of meaningful projects, cultivate training programs, and keep developing my leadership style.

“Being part of a brand that’s constantly pushing boundaries is incredibly motivating.”

How ICMS Prepared Her

Rhiannon attributes her success to the tools and mindset she gained at ICMS.

“The mix of academic knowledge and real-world experience was perfect,” she said.

“The internship program helped me figure out what I wanted to do, and the career fair connected me with industry leaders.

“The lecturers genuinely cared and pushed me to aim higher, not just in my studies but as a future leader.”

She also highlighted the value of group work, presentations, and living with students from around the world.

“All of it helped shape my confidence and communication skills,” she said.

“ICMS gave me the launchpad I needed to step into a program like Marriott Voyage.”

Advice for Current Students

For ICMS students aiming for similar opportunities, Rhiannon’s advice is clear: “Say yes to everything, even if it feels scary.

“Internships, networking, competitions – put yourself out there. And don’t hesitate to ask for help from lecturers or alumni.

“If you’re passionate and willing to work hard, good things will happen.”

Rhiannon’s journey highlights how ICMS equips students for success.

With the Marriott Voyage Program as her next step, she’s ready to take on new challenges, learn from global mentors, and continue building her career in hospitality.
