ICMS Sets Sights on University College Status

ICMS Sets Sights on University College Status

September 4, 2025

The International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) is taking an important step forward as it prepares to apply to TEQSA for recognition as a University College (UC).

Founder Darryl Courtney-O’Connor describes this ambition as one built on years of determination and teamwork, holding exciting possibilities for students, alumni, and the Northern Beaches community.

In a recent address, Courtney-O’Connor likened the journey towards UC status to climbing a mountain: challenging, inspiring, and possible through shared effort and belief.

After many years of building strong learning and teaching foundations, and with its new self-accrediting authority (SAA), ICMS has taken a necessary step in its journey toward this significant goal.

“More people have climbed Mount Everest than organisations achieving UC status,” he noted, highlighting just how rare and prestigious this standing would be.

Benefits for Students and Future Graduates

What UC Status Could Mean for Students and Future Graduates

  • Even stronger degrees: If ICMS achieves UC status, it would further strengthen its ability to deliver high-quality programs within its current self-accrediting authority (SAA) scope, which includes courses in the 1101 and 02 Fields of Education (FoEs). This milestone would reinforce ICMS’s commitment to maintaining rigorous academic standards and ensuring its programs in these areas remain closely aligned with industry needs.
  • Standout credentials: Graduation testamurs could become even more valuable, helping ICMS graduates make their mark in an increasingly competitive job market.
  • Clear student focus: Achieving UC status would reinforce ICMS’s mission of supporting student success, further strengthening teaching, real-world experiences, and career pathways.

Alumni Advantages

Potential Impact for Alumni

  • Enhanced prestige: Alumni from every era, both ICMS and its founding days as ICTHM, could gain from the heightened profile that a UC designation might bring.
  • Stronger alumni community: More recognition and storytelling could deepen ICMS’s identity and engage alumni through shared pride and achievement.
  • Growing long-term value: As ICMS advances toward its goal of UC status, the brand’s strength could continue to boost the value of graduates’ qualifications.

Community Impact

What UC Status Could Bring to the Northern Beaches

  • A local asset for the future: “The entire Northern Beaches community will have been gifted an asset that cannot be taken away,” Courtney-O’Connor said. If ICMS achieves UC status, it would further anchor the institution as a centre for education and opportunity.
  • Economic and community impact: A strengthened ICMS could mean more students, business partnerships, and local initiatives, supporting the Northern Beaches as a great place to study, work, and contribute.
  • National significance: Achieving UC status would showcase the region’s commitment to high-quality, industry-focused education, driven by a private institution that values merit and effort.

The ICMS Spirit

Throughout his speech, Courtney-O’Connor highlighted the importance of perseverance and goal setting, not just reaching for the summit but also preparing for the responsibilities that come next.

Sharing a story from a mountain-climbing expedition, he reminded the ICMS community about the value of careful planning, teamwork, and celebrating each milestone along the way.

He credits ICMS’s unique culture as the driver for progress: “Do the best we can, do the right thing, and show others we care.”

Guided by vision, integrity, and purpose, the team remains united in their focus on student success.

“At ICMS, merit is rewarded,” he said, reflecting an institution that grows through innovation and a clear sense of mission.

The Road Forward

The journey is far from over. As the team prepares to apply for UC status, ICMS remains committed to reviewing programs, building strong partnerships, and planning for a future that benefits students, alumni, and the wider community.

Courtney-O’Connor’s message is simple: together we keep climbing, always focused on giving students more and building an even stronger legacy for the Northern Beaches.

Achieving UC status would be both an endorsement and a promise that ICMS will keep striving for excellence, empowering students, supporting alumni, and enriching its community for years to come.
