Great waves and excellent team spirit contributed towards the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Surf Club bagging bronze in the team challenge category of the recent 2018 UniSport Nationals Div 1 – Surfing competition.
The Nationals took place at Cabarita Point on the NSW Tweed Coast between 24 and 26 September. This is the fourth year that ICMS has been represented on the waves at the competition which used to be known as the University Games.
“We had great waves for the event which was pleasing,” Rohan Fell of the ICMS Surf Club said.
“The last few years have produced very small surfing conditions but this year Cabarita Point produced some great waves for all of our surfers to do well on.”
The six surfers representing ICMS against nine other higher education institutions at Nationals this year were Riley Cadman, Jordan Tremlett, William Collard, Liam Simpson, Alicia Scott and Rohan Fell.
“We each competed in long board, short board and body board divisions. We then competed in the Teams Challenge where we selected three surfers to represent ICMS and go up against universities,” Fell explained.
ICMS selected Cadman as the short boarder, Fell as the long boarder and Scott as the body boarder for these UniSport Nationals.
ICMS placed first in the semi-final, before winning bronze in the final of the Teams Challenge. In the separate, individual shortboarding category, Cadman won a bronze medal.
Surfing is a popular sport at ICMS given the college’s coastal location in Northern Beaches, NSW, Sydney.
With nine beaches within walking distance of the Manly campus, the ICMS Surf Club is active in the ocean and in the community.
“The ICMS surf club prides itself on getting involved in local charities and organisations that do good for the community, and will look to compete once again next year in the Lifeline Northern Beaches Classic which raises money for Suicide prevention and Crisis support,” Fell said. Last year the surfing competition raised over $5k which was a great achievement.
ICMS’s upcoming plans for 2019 UniSport Nationals
Along with being involved in local and in-house competitions and fundraisers, the ICMS Surf Club will be looking to put a good team together for the 2019 UniSport Nationals.
“You can’t beat the location of ICMS if you have a love for surfing,” Fell said.
“The club was established on the foundations of getting people out there surfing, regardless of where they are from or of their surfing ability. ICMS and Manly beach gives the opportunity for international and domestic students to come together and share one of the best environments for surfing. ICMS has the best sporting arena right on its door step: Manly Beach.”
