ICMS Student Travels to Bali for International Conference as Part of Degree Placement 

Bachelor of Event Management student Charlotte Pietsch recently travelled to Bali with Sydney-based events company Sight Agency, supporting the delivery of a large-scale international conference as part of her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement at ICMS. 

The placement gave Charlotte hands-on experience across conference logistics, stakeholder coordination and guest experience, while working alongside a professional events team in a demanding, fast-paced environment. 

“Being onsite gave me a real understanding of how complex and fast paced large scale international events are,” Charlotte said. 

“From managing multiple venues and stakeholders to ensuring guests were at the right place at the right time, every detail mattered.” 

Real Responsibility From Day One

Working onsite in Bali, Charlotte was involved in every stage of the conference, from production setup through to guest experience and social events. 

It was a significant step up from the classroom, and one that tested both her skills and her confidence. 

She credited the experience with helping her grow professionally in ways that study alone cannot replicate. 

“Stepping into client facing and decision making moments helped build my professional confidence significantly,” she said. 

“One of the biggest takeaways from this experience.” 

Charlotte also highlighted four key lessons she carried away from the placement: the importance of clear communication across teams, vendors and venues; the ability to stay solution-focused under pressure; the impact of attention to detail on the overall guest experience; and the way confidence builds through doing, not just learning. 

She finished her time with Sight Agency grateful for the mentorship she received, thanking the team and her supervisor Anna Patterson “for the opportunity, support and trust throughout the event.” 

“This opportunity reinforced my passion for the events industry and gave me a valuable insight into what it takes to deliver large-scale experiences,” Charlotte said. 

Industry Experience Built Into Every ICMS Degree

Charlotte’s placement in Bali is one example of a WIL experience, but professional placements are not reserved for the few. Every ICMS student completes Work Integrated Learning as part of their degree. 

That means students spend up to 600 hours off campus, working in the industry they are training to enter. 

Placements are built into the course structure and supported by more than 1000 industry partners aligned to ICMS, covering every area of specialisation. 

Not every placement will involve international travel. But every student graduates with real, practical experience and a track record employers can see. 

For students considering a career in events, hospitality, business or any of the other fields ICMS offers, the message is clear: you will not wait until graduation to find out what working in your industry actually feels like.
