ICMS academic Dr Esther Chaderopa has co-authored a new book chapter titled Reflections on Cultural Shocks and Lessons From International Study and Work Experiences.
The chapter examines the challenges academics face while studying and working in Australia and New Zealand, using Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions and Berry’s Model of Acculturation as key frameworks.
The chapter highlights themes like resilience, cultural awareness, and global perspectives. It provides valuable lessons for international students, educators, and researchers navigating the complexities of cross-cultural environments.
“Writing this chapter was both therapeutic and revealing. It forced me to slow down and reflect on moments I had long pushed aside,” Dr Chaderopa shared.
“I was surprised by the strength I displayed during times I once considered overwhelming.”
Dr Chaderopa emphasised the richness of collaborating with other authors.
“One of the most powerful aspects of this collaboration was realising how many common threads ran through the experiences of different authors, especially around migration, identity, and professional growth.
“Yet each story also carried its own texture, shaped by personal and cultural contexts.”
ICMS values academic research and contributions that deepen understanding and create practical benefits for students, educators, and professionals.
Projects like Dr Chaderopa’s enrich academic work while offering tools to help students succeed in today’s increasingly connected and culturally diverse world.
Her experiences have also shaped her teaching at ICMS.
“My journey directly informs my teaching. I bring empathy, cultural awareness, and real-world insight into my classroom,” Dr Chaderopa explained.
“I want students to see that education is not a one-size-fits-all path, and that their unique stories are valid and valuable.”
She hopes her work encourages students and academics to reflect on their own resilience and growth.
“Our present struggles often become tomorrow’s wisdom.
“Ten years from now, I hope to look back again with the same sense of quiet pride and say, I made it through, and I grew.”
This chapter is a meaningful resource for understanding the dynamics of cross-cultural adaptation and offers insights applicable to a globalised academic and professional landscape.
