Subject Rationale:

Performance management is one of the key aspects of strategic management accounting, which is vital for success of any organisation, and essential for graduates wanting to pursue management accounting and business leadership roles.

Students will learn about business strategy, internal and external factors that may influence business strategy. They will explore how to determine organisational structure supporting the strategic objectives, how to determine critical success factors, key performance measures and targets, how to review performance and make decisions based on that.

The subject additionally focuses on information needs, technologies and systems required to manage and measure performance within an organisation. Students will learn how to identify and evaluate design features of an effective performance management system, improvements that could be made to existing systems as well as the impact of technology advancement on the systems development.

Learning Outcomes:

a) Analyse the relationships between organisational structure, strategy, strategic planning and control systems and strategic performance management.

b) Critically assess the organisational environment and its impact on business performance and strategic decision making.

c) Critically analyse financial and non-financial performance of an organisation, appreciating the complexities of divisionalised businesses and the impact of external factors.

d) Critically evaluate the appropriateness of and apply different measures of performance, costing, pricing and business control in complex business scenarios.

e) Evaluate the impact of technology on strategic planning, business decision-making, measuring and managing performance and suggest improvements to existing systems.

f) Provide innovative solutions to complex business problems and use persuasive visualisation tools to communicate the results to key business stakeholders.
