Dr Patrick Shearman, ICMS IT Program Manager, has been honoured with the ICMS Scholarship Excellence Award for innovation in cybersecurity.
This award recognises his project titled ‘Bridging the Digital Divide – Cyber Security for the Elderly’, an initiative aimed at enhancing online safety for vulnerable communities. It was handed over at the ICMS Faculty Forum in May.
The project focuses on mitigating the risks faced by elderly individuals online, addressing issues such as financial and emotional harm caused by cyber threats. A key objective is also to support those vulnerable with tailored educational materials and resources.
“There are victims of technology, and we need to protect them,” Dr Shearman noted.
“Social cyber security is about ensuring vulnerable groups are safeguarded against financial and mental harm, whether it’s bullying or other risks.”
Dr Shearman is working with ICMS Executive Officer Natalie Watt and Associate Professor Dr Betul Sekendiz.
Together, they are tackling the challenges of cyber security for older people, combining academic knowledge with practical solutions.
The project also received a federal government grant in late 2024, emphasising its importance.
Upon receiving the ICMS award, Dr Shearman revealed the collaborative nature of the effort.
“First, I have to say it is a team effort,” he remarked. “This community project is a great example of how academics and community engagement can come together to make a difference.”
The project also provides a platform for ICMS students and staff to put their cyber security learning into practice, for both academic growth and the benefit of the community.
“It’s a good opportunity for ICMS to take part in a worthy project. We’ll continue to work hard to protect vulnerable people online,” Dr Shearman said.
Dr Shearman’s recognition reflects the ICMS commitment to combining academic excellence with impactful, industry-focused education.
The college remains dedicated to fostering initiatives that benefit both students and the wider community.
The ‘Bridging the Digital Divide – Cyber Security for the Elderly’ project continues to develop, with updates anticipated as it progresses towards its goals in July 2026.
