Scholarly Practice Grants Awarded at ICMS, Presented at CAUTHE Conference

February 17, 2026

Three ICMS academics have been awarded Trimester 3 2025 Scholarly Practice Grants for their outstanding research. Following this recognition, each recipient took their work to the prestigious CAUTHE Conference in Adelaide to present their findings.

Supporting Impactful Research

Awarded three times a year, these competitive grants are designed to promote both academic and practical contributions from ICMS staff.

They give faculty regular chances to develop and apply for research support, helping to drive active scholarship, educational quality, and positive student outcomes.

The program encourages academics to stay engaged in scholarly pursuits, furthering their fields while enhancing the learning experience for students.

Grant Recipients and Their Work

Dr Nicole Hay, (Associate Dean, Tourism, Hospitality, and Events), was recognised for her paper, “Subject (Re)development as strategy: Connecting students, industry, and graduate identity in higher education.”

Her research offered fresh insight into how subject design can bridge academic theory with practical industry needs, particularly to support student career paths and strengthen graduate outcomes.

Katrina Denoux, (Learning, Teaching and Innovation Manager and Lecturer), in collaboration with Dr Johnnel Smith, presented “Connecting wellness tourism clustering and social impact: Transformational Experience Models for sustainable tourism destinations.”

Their research proposes a new framework for how wellness tourism can build social capital, drive positive change, and create deeper connections between visitors and destinations.

Dr Johnnel Smith, (Senior Program Manager, Tourism and Hospitality), alongside Jen Lee and Fifita Evans, shared her paper “Why or ‘wine’ not? An analysis of immersive learning excursions and expert led lectures in wine education.”

This engaging study explores innovative approaches to wine education, highlighting how hands-on learning and industry partnerships can better prepare students for careers in hospitality.

Sharing Research at CAUTHE

All three recipients were invited to present their studies at the CAUTHE Conference, a leading event for tourism, hospitality, and events education in the region.

Their achievements reflect ICMS’s dedication to research that drives progress for students, industry, and the academic community.
