How ICMS Helps Students Step Out of Their Comfort Zone

How ICMS Helps Students Step Out of Their Comfort Zone

June 10, 2026

Moving from a 120-acre property in a small country town to life in Manly was a big shift for Mikayla Croft. Her story shows how studying at ICMS pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped her grow in the process.

Mikayla recently shared her journey with ICMS. She reflected on how ICMS has supported her move from rural life to the city, and helped her pursue her passion for event management.

“Moving from a rural area to Manly and becoming a part of the ICMS family has given me so many fantastic opportunities that I would not have had access to at home,” Mikayla said.

“As much as I love the country lifestyle, my future is here in the city.”

A Supportive Community

For Mikayla, the sense of belonging and support at ICMS has been a standout part of her experience.

Studying a Bachelor of Event Management, she found the transition from her small country town to a bustling city initially overwhelming.

However, the welcoming culture at ICMS quickly made her feel at home.

“ICMS has a distinctive way of making you feel supported, welcomed, and a part of something bigger,” Mikayla explained.

“It really has become my home away from home.”

Mikayla also highlighted the role of ICMS lecturers and staff in shaping her journey.

“I would like to thank the lecturers and staff who consistently guide, challenge, and inspire me,” she said.

“Their dedication goes far beyond the classroom and plays a huge role in shaping our futures.”

Real-World Experience

One of the defining aspects of Mikayla’s ICMS journey has been the hands-on learning opportunities.

Through her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement with Motti and Smith, an event management company founded by ICMS alumni Fernando Motti and Blake Smith, Mikayla has gained invaluable industry experience.

“Over the past five months, I’ve attended some incredible, eye-opening events that blew this country girl’s mind,” Mikayla shared.

“They’ve given me real-world experience, built my confidence, and allowed me to develop practical skills that I know will stay with me throughout my career.”

Looking Ahead

Recently appointed as President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Mikayla continues to lead by example on campus. She’s proud to represent ICMS and the values it instils in its students.

“I’ve loved every moment of my placement, and it’s opportunities like this that truly set ICMS apart,” Mikayla said.

Mikayla spoke at the 2026 ICMS Scholarship Ceremony.
