Ambitious FFA Interns Credit ICMS for Career-Boosting Opportunity

August 1, 2018

A pair of International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Sports Management interns completing their industry training at Football Federation Australia (FFA) are using the opportunity to take their first steps towards achieving their career dreams in the sports industry.

ICMS students Ben Bradford and Justin Burt, both in their second year of Sports Management bachelor degrees, have been working at FFA since the beginning of the year; Burt in the League Operations department and Bradford in Marketing and Fan Engagement.

Interning at the Football Federation Australia

“We were both pretty stoked,” Burt said of the opportunity to work as interns at FFA.

FFA is the governing body of football in Australia and is a member of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the international governing body for football. In 2005, FFA established Australia’s first ever fully professional national football league – the Hyundai A-League, of which Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are a part, both of which are also a part of the Westfield W-League introduced by FFA in 2008. FFA’s long-term vision is for Football to be the largest and most popular sport in Australia.

Interning where their interests lie

“From an early age, I played all codes of sport, particularly rugby league and soccer. When I thought about my future around Year 12 it made sense to work in something I’m passionate in, soccer in particular. To work behind the scenes in a sport that you love is exactly why I’m here,” Burt said.

Bradford added that his dream job would be to become head of a marketing department in a sports industry, for instance at FFA Australia.

The fact that both have now gained experience at this high level of sport administration in Australia is something that drew them to study at ICMS.

Internships integrated into their degrees

“As soon as I heard about people getting opportunities like these (at FFA) I knew that ICMS was where I wanted to be. ICMS offers 600 hours of actual work placement in the industry which is organised for you by an unmatchable team like the ICMS work integrated learning team.  They really set you up with the international and domestic connections (you need to succeed in your chosen career) … that won me over,” Burt said.

Like all courses and degrees offered at ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, NSW, Sydney, the ICMS Bachelor of Sports Management degree has a built-in work industry placement component. Multiple industry partners offer students the chance to work in the industry in which they hope to one day forge a career, giving them practical experience alongside academic theory, and placing them at the heart of networking opportunities.

Why did Ben and Justin choose ICMS?

“I chose to study Sports Management at ICMS because it was a degree that you could be studying in a business environment but which still combines the passion that I have for sport, most notably for football,” Bradford said. A tour of the ICMS campus as a prospective student sealed the deal, he said, as he was “blown away” by the college’s facilities, social environment and smaller classes.

Burt’s ultimate ambition is to go in the direction of Player Management.

“I feel this ICMS Sports Management degree, plus the FFA experience, is bringing me one step closer to doing that,” he said.
