American Football Future for ICMS Sports Management Graduate

February 2, 2018

A chance invitation to try his hand at American football has landed International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) graduate Matt McRobert the opportunity to play Division 1 College Football in the United States.

McRobert, who played for the ICMS Bandicoots as a student, will be pulling on the BearKats jersey to play D1 NCAA Football for Sam Houston State University in Texas, playing in front of thousands of fans at the Bower Stadium.

While in America, McRobert will continue his studies with a Masters of Sports Administration, building on the ICMS Bachelor of Sports Management he completed in 2017.

“The idea to play American football came through a friend who told me to try out for ProKick Australia, an academy based in Melbourne that helps Australians learn American football. This gives the players the chance to further their education because they can then play college football in the States,” McRobert said.

“I had never kicked an American football until the tryout date, but fortunately I was offered a spot to train with the academy in Melbourne. I will be attending Sam Houston State University in Texas and studying a Masters in Sports Management.”

McRobert made the most of the sporting aspect of studying at ICMS, and played for the college’s club rugby side, the ICMS Bandicoots who played in the local Sydney league.

“I enjoyed the fun season, making many new friendships that I will have forever,” he said. “Also, the tennis courts on campus are always available to use for any sports and the headlands are used for the dedicated boot camp sessions throughout the terms.”

He also enjoyed the location of ICMS in Northern Beaches, NSW, overlooking Manly Beach, recently rated the top beach in Australia by travel website, Trip Advisor.

ICMS Dean of Students and Head of the Athletics Department, Alice De Innocentiis congratulated McRobert on his achievements, and wished him well in his move to America.

“Being selected to play for a D1 NCAA Football team in the US is an amazing stepping stone for any athlete in this discipline. Matt will be showcasing his skills in front of crowds of more than 10 000 people, which is a dream come true for any athlete. We wish him all the best in his career.”
