ICMS Master’s Degree Opens Doors for Filipino Professional

When Janelle Dilao left the Philippines to pursue her dream of studying abroad, she knew she wanted more than just a degree – she wanted an experience that would transform both her career and her life.

Today, as a Master of Management student at the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), Janelle says she’s found exactly that.

“Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine,” she said. “I chose Australia because of the lifestyle – the beaches, the coastal living, the balance between work and leisure. But what really drew me to ICMS was its strong industry connections. They don’t just partner with companies; they partner with world-renowned companies.”

Back home, Janelle had already made her mark in marketing, stepping into a managerial role just five years into her career. But she often felt she needed more tools to match the experience of her older colleagues. “I was too young, too inexperienced compared to everyone else,” she admitted. “That’s why I decided to accelerate my growth through formal education.”

At ICMS, she found herself not just studying theories, but applying them directly. During her Work Integrated Learning placement with Bausch + Lomb, Janelle went from sales and marketing coordinator to associate brand manager. “The things I learned in class translated straight into my role. That’s what allowed me to really contribute, and be promoted.”

But her journey hasn’t been all work. Living in Sydney, Janelle has embraced the lifestyle that first drew her here. After a day of study or work, she says it feels like “living in a holiday every day”, whether that means unwinding at Manly Beach, or exploring city icons like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

She has also been recognised for her dedication at ICMS itself: making the Dean’s List, mentoring through the Peer Assisted Learning Service (PALS) program, and receiving the Postgraduate Innovation Scholarship. For Janelle, seeing her name engraved on the walls of the college’s iconic sandstone building was a moment of pride. “It feels like you’ve literally left your mark,” she smiled.

Looking back, Janelle says choosing ICMS has been “pivotal” to her career and her confidence. “If it weren’t for the education and support I’ve received here, I wouldn’t be where I am today. ICMS has truly helped me grow into the professional I wanted to be.”
