Inspired by Culture, Driven by Dreams: A First Nations Student’s Achievement

April 30, 2025

For Joshua O’Neill, receiving the ICMS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship has been lifechanging.

A domestic student from Ingleburn, NSW, Joshua is currently studying a Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) at the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS).

At the ICMS March 2025 Scholarship Ceremony, Joshua shared his inspiring story as one of the event’s speakers.

“As a proud Aboriginal man, this scholarship means so much to me, and I can feel how proud my family, especially my parents, are of me,” Joshua said.

Receiving this scholarship not only honours his heritage but also provides financial support, allowing him to focus fully on his studies and career goals.

Inspiring a New Generation

Being the eldest in his family, Joshua feels a strong sense of responsibility to pave the way for his siblings.

“I hope to show my younger siblings that anything is possible and that they can achieve anything they set their mind to,” he said.

His determination to inspire others, especially future First Nations students, is at the heart of his educational journey.

Feeling at Home at ICMS

Joshua’s first visit to the stunning ICMS Northern Beaches Campus in Manly left a lasting impression.

Guided by the NRL School to Work team, he was welcomed warmly and felt an immediate connection to the vibrant ICMS community.

“I was amazed by the time and effort the ICMS team invested in showing me around this beautiful campus.

“As soon as I saw the many cultural connections within the ICMS community, I felt truly welcome to study here as a student,” he shared.

ICMS’s Commitment to First Nations Students

ICMS has shown a strong commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Indigenous students through scholarships and in encouraging cultural inclusivity on campus.

Ann Whitelock, Chair of ICMS Scholarships, shared her thoughts on the program’s impact.

“This scholarship is about recognising the potential in students like Joshua and giving them the chance to shine.

“It’s incredible to see how opportunities like this can empower students to grow and make a real difference in their communities. We’re so proud to be a part of that.”

The ICMS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship is just one example of how the college is helping students achieve their full potential.

At the March 2025 Scholarship Ceremony, Joshua was one of over 50 recipients honoured for their achievements.

With more than $13 million awarded over the years, these scholarships ease financial pressures, opening doors to higher education for students like Joshua, who bring unique perspectives and values to the ICMS family.

Paving the Way for Future Students

Looking ahead, Joshua is determined to make a difference.

“I commit to being a role model for my peers and to promote ICMS and all the opportunities it offers to future First Nations students,” he said.
