Hospitality Student’s Minister’s Student Achiever Award Marks Three in a Row for ICMS

October 16, 2019

When International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) student Emily Walsh was awarded the Minister’s Student Achiever Award 2019 at a ceremony in NSW Parliament House recently, she became the forth ICMS hospitality student to be honoured in this way in as many years.

Previous ICMS winners of this prestigious award that honours the best and brightest students entering the tourism industry are Kylie Evans in 2010, Chelsea McKay in 2017, and Lorenzo Merriman in 2018. The awards celebrate the academic achievements of students and acknowledge the importance of professional training to the tourism industry.

The consistent recognition of academic excellence and inspired leadership of ICMS students aligns strongly with the higher education institution’s aims to produce graduates who are career-ready and future leaders in their fields. ICMS is located in Northern Beaches, Sydney, NSW, with a City Campus located in the heart of Sydney. Destination NSW is the lead government agency for the New South Wales (NSW) tourism and major events sectors.

Walsh, a third year ICMS Bachelor of Hospitality Management student who also works at the InterContinental Hotels Groups (IHG), was one of 12 recipients of the award given at the ceremony. The awards have been in existence since 1991 as part of the NSW Government’s drive to grow tourism in the state, and as a means to acknowledge high achieving tourism and hospitality students.

“I am so honoured to have been nominated and recognised at the Destination NSW Minister’s Student Achiever Awards for consistent academic excellence throughout my Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree,” Walsh, who has previously been awarded an ICMS She has previously been awarded a Courtney O’Connor Scholarship and an Erasmus Study Exchange Scholarship, said.*

“Many thanks to my lecturer Nassima Kennedy for nominating me and to Stuart Ayres, Minister of Tourism, NSW, for awarding me this prestigious award. A further thank you to all my lecturers and peers at the International College of Management, Sydney, and colleagues at InterContinental Sydney who have assisted me in developing my knowledge of the industry thus far. I would not be where I am in my career without their ongoing encouragement and support.”

Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens SC MP, congratulated Walsh on receiving the 2019 Minister’s Student Achiever Awards in Tourism and Hospitality studies.

“I congratulate Emily as the recipient of the Student Achiever Award. Emily currently works at the Intercontinental Sydney and is completing her last semester at the International College of Management Sydney,” Henskens said in a statement.
