Real-World Learning: How Industry-Focused Study Shaped Aladin’s Path at ICMS

Aladin Ladreit De Lacharriere is a Bachelor of Property (Development, Investment and Valuation) student at ICMS who came looking for an education that connects learning with the real world. 

From the start, he had one question driving his decision. 

“Am I choosing an education that actually prepares me for the real world, or am I just ticking a box?” he said. 

For Aladin, that question had a clear answer.  

He was looking for a practical approach to learning that could help him prepare for the property industry. 

Theory that never clicked, until it became practical

Aladin’s path to property started with how he learns. He was looking for a field where practical application could bring his learning to life. 

“I wasn’t falling behind because the work was hard,” he said. 

“I just couldn’t see the point in memorising abstract theory I’d never use.” 

That pushed him toward a field where negotiation, real assets, and tangible outcomes are part of the day-to-day reality. 

Learning from people still in the field

What drew Aladin to ICMS was its industry-focused approach to learning. 

Rather than seeing his studies as separate from the professional world, he wanted an education that connected his learning with the industry he plans to enter. 

His grandfather, who built his life on property, gave Aladin an early sense of what the industry demands: discipline, patience, and a willingness to do the groundwork. 

“He showed me early what this industry can do for someone willing to lay the groundwork, put in the work, and stay patient,” Aladin said. 

That practical mindset carried into his studies. 

At ICMS, Aladin said his learning has remained connected to the realities of the property industry. 

ICMS courses are created with industry for industry, with around 90% of lecturers working in industry. 

This industry connection gives students the opportunity to learn from professionals who work in industry. 

Purpose beyond the deal

Aladin’s previous education also shaped how he thinks about business and the industry he is entering. 

As a former student of Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview, he said those values continue to influence how he approaches property and business. 

“Property isn’t just closing deals,” he said. “It’s turning values and hard work into physical spaces that actually serve communities.” 

That perspective, he said, fits naturally with an education that connects his studies with the real world. 

A community that matched his work ethic

Outside the classroom, Aladin trains and competes as a rower. 

That means early mornings, physical discipline, and showing up every day without exception. He wanted a course and community that could support that same commitment. 

Living on campus helped. The community around him gave him genuine support and a sense of belonging that made it easier to stay focused and committed. 

“It felt like a proper community: people around you, real support when you needed it, and a genuine sense of belonging,” he said. 

Studying alongside students from different backgrounds added to that experience.  

At ICMS, he said, you are not just earning credits.  

You are living and working with people who are just as driven. 

The ICMS student experience is supported through small class sizes, academic support, career coaching and resources including the Professional Development Lab and Student Success Centre.

Choose the place that pushes you

Aladin’s final message was direct. 

“Choosing where to study isn’t about picking the safe option. It’s about choosing the place that actually pushes you,” he said. 

His advice was simple: ask the hard questions and look for a place that backs your work ethic, holds you to a real standard, and connects your studies with the industry you want to enter. 

“Make the most of today,” he said.  

“Choose the place that’ll genuinely push you.”
