How ICMS Helped a Student Build Community 

For Bjorn Kikkert, an international student from the Netherlands who goes by ‘Bear’, ICMS has been a place to grow, connect, and make a real difference. 

Bjorn shared recently how the ICMS International Scholarship gave him the time and freedom to pursue his goals and create a sense of community on campus. 

“It’s difficult to convey, as a self-funded student, how much has changed in my last year,” Bjorn said. 

Creating a Space for Connection

When Bjorn started at ICMS two years ago, he was juggling his studies with night shifts to pay for his living expenses.  

Despite his busy schedule, he had always wanted to run an Alpha course on campus. The course provides a space for students to discuss life’s bigger questions, like finding guidance and purpose. 

Thanks to the ICMS International Scholarship, Bjorn was able to reduce his night shifts and finally make this dream a reality. 

“Because of my scholarship, I managed to free up just enough time to run an Alpha course each week last term,” Bjorn explained. 

“I made sure to prepare some snacks, prepare the course each week, and I would go around telling the students it would be on.  

“It was a space where the students actually got to talk about issues we don’t normally get to talk about.  

“They also built their own personal, strong relationships. Some fun was had, but real peace was found here.” 

Relief and Opportunity

The scholarship not only allowed Bjorn to create a meaningful space for his peers, but it also gave him some much-needed personal relief. 

“It definitely gave me two terms of relief, and I’m incredibly grateful for this,” he said.  

“It gave me new friends, new skills, and experiences I will bring to my own business one day.” 

Bjorn is currently completing his Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement with ICMS industry partner Van Cleef & Arpels, where he supports the client development team by helping run events and interacting with high-end clients.  

While he still works at a hotel to support himself, he is already working on a business plan for the future. 

“I’ve got my own personal business plan right now, so who knows? Maybe if I can make that happen, it’ll be soon,” Bjorn shared.

“I’d like to really thank the lecturers we’ve got here today, who are teaching us day in, day out,” he said.  

“They’re fabulous, and if it was up to me, they should receive a golden star.”
