ICMS Student Lands Incredible Property Job Before Graduation

ICMS Student Lands Incredible Property Job Before Graduation

November 19, 2021

International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Bachelor of Property (Development, Investment and Valuation) student Daniel Garing has a headstart on his career having already secured a role at global property firm Cushman & Wakefield – before he has even graduated.

Dan, a Knox Grammar School alum, is currently employed in the property sector as a Leasing Analyst in the NSW leasing team for Cushman & Wakefield, a company which employs approximately 51,000 people across approximately 400 offices in 70 countries. Dan graduates at the end of 2021, but has already been in his current property role role since April.

Alongside fellow ICMS property student Stephanie Macourt, Dan is an interviewer at the upcoming online ICMS Q&A with Simon Fenn (pictured above right with Dan). Mr Fenn is the ANZ Managing Director at Cushman & Wakefield and greatly admired by Dan and others within the property industry. Dan and Steph have both completed their Bachelor of Property (Development, Investment and Valuation) academic subjects and are already working within the industry.

ICMS’ Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program was a motivator for Dan to choose to study at ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, Sydney, and in the city of Sydney, NSW. Each degree offered has a built in practical industry experience component which offers students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and network connections while still a student.

“I was always excited about studying a Bachelor of Property degree, the only decision I had to make was where. There were multiple courses and options to do this, however ICMS stood out. What motivated me to study at ICMS was the practical side to the degree. The idea of learning the theory then applying that into a work placement within your industry really resonated with me,” Dan said.

“The ICMS WIL program has been a unique learning process for myself. It has allowed me to apply the theory I have learned into a practical role within the property industry. The concepts I learned I can then apply and see within Cushman & Wakefield’s day to day operations. The WIL program also allowed me to evaluate how I was performing as well as enforce critical thinking into my role.”

As a leasing analyst in the NSW leasing team for Cushman & Wakefield Dan has a range of scope and responsibilities that vary from daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly tasks.

“The role is centered around supporting the team through an accurate and up-to-date database as well as providing analysis on the market,” Dan said.

“My studies at ICMS have provided me with a foundation of knowledge and skills in property that has allowed me to transition into my role. My ICMS education gave me extensive knowledge into the property industry as well as business functions. Specifically, the Commercial Real Estate subject has helped me most in my current position.”

Dan’s father and uncle both work in the property industry, and it made sense for him to follow in their footsteps.

“I have always had an interest in property and really enjoyed learning and developing my knowledge during my studies at ICMS. It was when I started my role here at Cushman & Wakefield that I learned what I really enjoy about the industry. It really is diverse, with the opportunity to work in leasing, capital markets, capital transactions, property management, commercial valuations, property development and more. It’s an industry where you can change career paths and have opportunities in many sectors that all relate to each other.”

As for studying at ICMS, Dan recommends the institute of higher education to prospective students also looking to ignite their career while enjoying the full student experience.

“I would strongly recommend studying at ICMS,” Dan said.

“The college gives all the students a huge benefit over other institutions with the WIL program which gives students the chance to work in the field of their choice and apply what they have learnt. I really enjoyed studying at ICMS; I had the chance to create relationships and connect with many international students as well as local people from Sydney, with the added benefit of studying in beautiful Manly!”
