Supercars Internship accelerates ICMS student’s career ambitions

August 29, 2024

ICMS Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) student Laura Smith revved up her future career in racing with an internship at Supercars, Australia’s premier motorsport series.

The internship is part of Laura’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement which she is doing in her second year of studies.

“My experience in my WIL placement as a partnerships intern at Supercars has been the most incredible introduction into the sport business workplace I could ask for,” Laura shared.

“I love coming to work each day and being surrounded by a fun, passionate, and hard-working team, and that I am constantly learning new things every day.”

Laura’s versatility has seen her assisting not only the partnerships team but also the digital and marketing teams.

She highlighted some of her internship’s key moments, including two major events:

  • At Sydney Motorsport Park, Laura helped deliver behind-the-scenes tours, assisted with course car rides, and attended signing sessions.
  • During the Tasmania SuperSprint, she assisted the event marketing team with setting up and executing multiple signing sessions, providing invaluable support across various locations.

“Attending events definitely heightened my experience at Supercars and was such a rewarding experience,” Laura said.

“It’s really cool to see how the hard work of every department comes together to deliver an incredible event.”

Impressing Industry Leaders

Laura’s passion and commitment during her Supercars internship did not go unnoticed.

“Laura has been a huge asset to the Commercial team along with the wider business,” said Bec Willbridge, Supercars Commercial Operations Manager.

“Laura has shown a clear passion and interest in our organisation and is consistently going above and beyond on all tasks as well as executing all tasks at a high level.”

Supercars Head of Partnerships, Mitch Kane, agreed.

“Laura has also been keen to explore other areas of the business to gain exposure to different departments and to assist with events where extra help is needed,” he added.

The ICMS WIL team is proud to see their students do well in real-world jobs, regularly impressing their managers with their hard work and skills.

“It’s great to see Laura’s hard work, dedication and passion have not only been recognised by the team but made a significant impact on Supercars,” ICMS Professional Placement Consultant Carolyn Thomson said.

“This achievement reflects positively on the college and highlights the calibre of students we are preparing for industry.”

A Stepping Stone to Career Success

Laura’s time as an intern at Supercars has greatly influenced what she wants to do in her career.

“My primary career goal has always been to work in motorsport, so any experience with Supercars is already a major tick in that box for me,” she explained.

“My time at Supercars has definitely brought me more clarity around what a ‘career in motorsport’ will look like for me.”

She added, “I now know that my career goals for the future is to stay with Supercars and work within the partnerships team.

“It is an aspect of the business I find so interesting and rewarding to be a part of.

“I am so grateful for my time at Supercars and all the learning opportunities it has presented me with; I look forward to seeing where the remainder of my internship with Supercars will take me.”

The ICMS Difference

At ICMS, real-world, industry-focused experience – like Laura’s at Supercars – is not just encouraged; it’s an essential part of the curriculum.

Thanks to the WIL program, where students are placed in internships as part of their degree, by the time students graduate, they have already built valuable industry connections and gained hands-on experience in their chosen field.

The ICMS Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) provides students with the business knowledge and skills needed for a career in the sports industry.

The program includes topics like athlete management, sports marketing, event management, and facilities coordination, preparing graduates for leadership roles.

This degree allowed Laura to follow her passion for motorsport by giving her the opportunity to intern with Supercars.
