Two Wallabies in Two Weeks for ICMS Sports Management Students

March 23, 2018

Two Wallabies in two weeks – Nick Phipps and Dean Mumm – addressed International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Sports Management students this month.

In separate guest lectures, the Australian rugby players visited the Northern Beaches, NSW, campus and shared with students lessons they had learned as professional athletes within the national and international sports industry.

“To have two athletes of such stature address our Sports Management students is not only incredibly exciting for ICMS, but also valuable as a learning experience for them,” ICMS CEO and President Dr Dominic Szambowski said.

“We are serious about exposing our sports management students to the inner workings of professional sports and all that this entails. Who better to hear it from than the two national rugby players, Dean Mumm and Nick Phipps, who so graciously came and spoke about being in the heart of the Australian rugby industry. This also represents the fantastic relationship ICMS enjoys with leaders in the national sports industry.”

Dean Mumm, one of Australia’s most respected athletes, spoke to ICMS Sports Management students about his stellar career with the Qantas Wallabies, NSW Waratahs and Exeter. The 56-test veteran, who captained the Qantas Wallabies at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, also spoke about his biggest challenge yet; in April this year he will be trekking to the North Pole to raise awareness, and funds, for Borne, a charity for research to prevent premature births.

Current Qantas Wallaby and NSW Waratah, Nick Phipps, spoke about leadership, professionalism and life after sport. Students were given a taste of life as a professional athlete as Nick discussed his daily training schedule and the experience of being coached by Australian head coach Michael Cheika.

The New South Wales Waratahs, referred to as the Waratahs, are an Australian rugby union team representing the majority of NSW in the Super Rugby competition. The Australian national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, represents Australia in international rugby union and is controlled by the Australian Rugby Union.
