Why Study Marketing? Student Shares Her Story

Why Study Marketing? Student Shares Her Story

August 18, 2021

Why study Marketing? And where should you go to study marketing? These were questions that ICMS Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student, Juliette Wilson answered in her speech at the ICMS Virtual Open Day.

Juliette is currently a second year Marketing student, who began her journey with ICMS at the beginning of 2020.

Juliette loves being part of the community at ICMS. She’s also really enjoying the marketing degree she is currently studying: “Marketing is psychological, methodical, creative, innovative. So many things. And I love all of it. ”

One of the highlights of studying marketing has been her industry training placement, which is equivalent to two subjects within her degree. She emphasises that whilst lectures are important and fun, the industry training component gives students the ability to have practical experience and learn skills that aren’t able to be taught within a classroom.

“My favourite part of doing an internship is the collaborative aspect, so brainstorming and workshopping new ideas, and being able to work alongside people who are just as passionate about marketing as I am.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I actually really enjoy my lectures, and I think they definitely provide you with concepts and knowledge needed to succeed. But that being said, there are just some things that can’t be taught in a classroom, and I feel like I am on the right track to achieving the career I want because I have a combination of knowledge and work experience”.

For Juliette, choosing to study marketing as her future career was not necessarily clear cut, but was heavily immersed in her dad’s marketing agency and this influenced her to realise there are many different paths that marketing can follow, and rarely will follow a repetitive pattern.

“I realised that when you choose to study marketing you don’t have to be just one thing, and your career won’t ever be the same, repetitive thing every day. How exciting is that! In marketing, you channel both the analytical and logical left side of your brain, as well as the creative and artistic right side. So that’s why I decided to study a Bachelor of Business (Marketing)”.

After graduation, Juliette has plans to work in the marketing department of a luxury fashion label, a television media company, or even a music platform.

“I also would love to have a platform where I can inspire and motivate other people. Whether that be giving a TED talk, or just pursuing motivational speaking. I have no doubt in my mind that I can achieve these things, especially with an epic degree and marketing experience already under my belt”.

Her advice to students looking to study at ICMS is to remember that at the college you have the beautiful scenery, the opportunity for a built-in internship and a personalised experience.

“You are way more than your exam scores or your ATAR. Way, way more. Like I mentioned earlier, feeling that sense of belonging and recognition is so important, and when you feel supported and like you’re part of a community, that is when you’re going to succeed,” said Juliette.

Introduction

“Let me ask you a question. Now keep in mind, this question is rhetorical, so I just want you to think a little bit about what your answer would be.

What do you think is the most important part about studying at a higher education institution? What should you really focus on getting out of it? Some of you might say, “a solid education that will prepare you for professional success”, others might say “the opportunity to make connections and grow as a person”. Maybe you believe it’s important because you get the opportunity to study what you love, and what you’re passionate about.

All of those things are definitely true. 100% true. But there is one thing that I believe is super important, and I can promise you, you might not get this at all higher education institutions. That is a sense of belonging. A sense of community. A place where you feel at home.

And I feel at home here.

Actually, when I was asked to speak today about my experience at ICMS, there was one moment that came to mind that I would love to share with you today. About a year and a half ago, I was just beginning my ICMS journey. I was nervous, excited and energised for this fresh start. This particular moment that I am about to talk about happened on the last day of my orientation week. It was “Campus Day”, and there was a DJ playing music, different stalls, and lots of activities including a colour run. It was genuinely so much fun, and was an awesome opportunity to meet other new students.

At the end of the day, when people were starting to leave and pack up, myself and one of my high school friends who was also starting at ICMS last year and had also attended the day, were sitting on a bench just near the courtyard cafe here on campus, waiting for someone to pick us up. We were soaking wet and covered in coloured chalk from the colour run, and we were so happy.

We were just talking about the day and the week we had just had, and I remember looking at her and saying “I think we made the right decision. I think we’re really going to like it here.” And you know what, I was right. Because despite the fact that this past year and a half has been incredibly difficult for all of us, I can confidently say that choosing to study at ICMS was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Because I felt like, and still feel like, I’m part of a community.”

Highlights of Studying Marketing

“Speaking of good decisions, let’s talk about my decision to study marketing. My course so far has had some really cool highlights. I think the best part has definitely been the industry training aspect. It’s awesome to know that not only am I getting a degree, I’m also getting practical experience through my internship and learning a lot of skills I wouldn’t necessarily gain in a lecture.

My favourite part of doing an internship is the collaborative aspect, so brainstorming and workshopping new ideas, and being able to work alongside people who are just as passionate about marketing as I am. Don’t get me wrong, I actually really enjoy my lectures, and I think they definitely provide you with concepts and knowledge needed to succeed. But that being said, there are just some things that can’t be taught in a classroom, and I feel like I am on the right track to achieving the career I want because I have a combination of knowledge and work experience.”

My favourite Marketing subjects

“Through these lectures, I’ve had the opportunity to do some fun subjects like Digital Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, Integrated Marketing Communications, and one of my favourites, Management Solutions for a Changing World. I especially liked that subject because as someone who wants to manage and lead people one day and is a natural born leader, it was awesome to learn about how to manage people effectively and with confidence, and the different styles of management that work in different corporate environments.”

Why did I choose ICMS

“In terms of choosing ICMS, I could stand here and say that it was the small classes or the industry training that made me choose to study here. Sure, those things were all attractive and definitely helped with the decision making process, but it was actually my early entry ceremony and cocktail party that ended up being the reason I chose ICMS and why I am standing here today.

That night of the cocktail party, I went home with such a big smile on my face. The students and staff were so warm and genuine, and I could actually see myself being a student here. In year 12, I attended all the university, college and other higher education institution open days, explored all the campuses, but I never really clicked with any of them until ICMS. And when the early entry party happened, I just knew this was where I wanted to be.”

Why did I Chose to Study Marketing

“I chose to study marketing for a variety of reasons. I was never the kid growing up who knew exactly what they wanted to be when they were older. If you are one of those people, that’s awesome, but I just never had a clear idea of who I wanted to become. Growing up, my dad worked in marketing and ended up starting his own marketing agency, so I was really immersed in this world from a young age.

So that along with learning a bit about it in high school, I realised that with marketing you don’t have to be just one thing, and your career won’t ever be the same, repetitive thing every day. How exciting is that! In marketing, you channel both the analytical and logical left side of your brain, as well as the creative and artistic right side. Marketing is psychological, methodical, creative, innovative. So many things. And I love all of it. So that’s how I ended up pursuing a Bachelor of Business (Marketing).”

When Career Gaols

“Personally, I am a very ambitious and goal-driven person, so I have a lot of career goals and dreams that I hope to achieve once I’ve graduated here at ICMS. I plan on working for the marketing department of a luxury fashion label, a television media company (such as Warner Brothers or NBC), or even for a music platform (such as spotify).

Maybe all of them! Who knows, but once I’ve gained more experience, I definitely plan on becoming the Chief Marketing Officer of a company in one of those industries. I also would love to have a platform where I can inspire and motivate other people. Whether that be giving a ted talk, or just pursuing motivational speaking. I have no doubt in my mind that I can achieve these things, especially with an epic degree and marketing experience already under my belt.”

I Would Recommend ICMS

“To conclude, there are genuinely a lot of reasons why I would recommend ICMS. You get to study at a beautiful campus here in Sydney, you get the opportunity to complete an internship as part of your degree, which is so invaluable, and you’ll honestly have a lot of fun too. I think the biggest thing though is that you get a personalised experience, and you’ll be treated like a person, not a number.

Because you are way more than your exam scores or your ATAR. Way, way more. Like I mentioned earlier, feeling that sense of belonging and recognition is so important, and when you feel supported and like you’re part of a community, that is when you’re going to succeed.”
