The ICMS Graduate Certificate of Information Technology is a postgraduate qualification designed to equip you with the skills to enter an IT career, or can be a pathway to a Master of Information Technology (MIT) at ICMS.

The Graduate Certificate of Information Technology will provide you with foundational ICT knowledge, focusing on core competencies.

After completing the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology, graduates will have knowledge of ICT fundamentals and will gain practical ICT skills, enabling them to make an immediate contribution within the industry.

Students will have an opportunity to study one subject from the ICMS MIT specialisation streams as a specified elective subject and explore the specialisation they may want to pursue in the future. Choose from:

The ICMS Graduate Certificate of Information Technology offers:

  • 3 x Core subjects
  • 1 x Specified Elective

4 Subjects in total (16 credit points)

(Australian and New Zealand students may wish to accelerate their studies and complete this course in one trimester.)

Upon successful completion of at least two subjects in the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology, you may choose to progress, with advanced standing (credit), into one of the following master’s degrees:

The Graduate Certificate of IT will provide students with industry relevant competencies and knowledge for a successful start of a career in the ICT field.  

The demand for skilled IT professionals is reflected in the various skilled migration occupations and pathways that are currently available in Australia.

The Graduate Certificate of IT could position graduates to embark on a career in a range of IT sectors that are currently identified as ‘strategic skills’ by the Australian Government.

 

Upon successful completion of the ICMS Graduate Certificate of Information Technology you will able to:

  • Apply the core body of knowledge of the IT discipline, employing relevant industry standards and best practices. 
  • Design and construct IT solutions to real-world problems, exercising critical thinking and enacting skills that underpin the dynamics of the information technology field. 
  • Effectively collaborate with others from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of IT proficiency, using fit-for-purpose communication methods. 
  • Work autonomously and responsibly in the dynamic IT environment by implementing self-management strategies, enacting intellectual independence, and evaluating own performance for continuing professional development.

Please note: For domestic students, subjects outside of the ICMS core business curriculum that are not offered at your preferred campus during the selected trimester will be offered either online or at an alternate campus (Northern Beaches Campus or City Campus). For international students, the course will be delivered at the campus location as per your letter of offer unless a change is agreed in writing.

International students and online study: In accordance with the Australian Government ESOS National Code, international students on a Student Visa can only undertake 33% of their total enrolment load online. They must be enrolled in at least one on-campus subject in each compulsory study period. Learn more.

Graduate Certificate of Information Technology Career Options

The Graduate Certificate of Information Technology will provide learners with core ICT knowledge and skills, preparing them for junior level ICT roles.

The course information on this website is indicative of a typical study pattern only and is subject to change. Students enrolling into a mid-trimester intake will begin their course with two (2) subjects only and resume their preferred study pattern in the following study period.

Enrolled students will be made aware of changes to their course structure or subjects. Not all subjects are offered every trimester. The Academic Consulting Office can assist you with subject selection and structuring your course.

A typical full-time study load is no more than 12 credit points and no less than 8 credit points per study period (32 credit points per year) for postgraduate courses.

Dr Patrick Shearman

B.Comm (Hons), MSc, MInfTech, PhD

Dr Patrick Shearman is on the Senior Academic Team. As Program Manager (Information Technology), Dr Shearman is responsible for overseeing the development of undergraduate and postgraduate information technology degrees.

Dr Shearman holds a PhD from the UTS Business School, a Master of Information Technology (MinFtech) from Sydney University, a Master of Science (MSc) in systems analysis from City, University of London and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from Galway University, Ireland. Patrick has also completed the Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard’s Derek Bok Centre for Teaching and Learning and the MIT Sloan Certificate in Artificial Intelligence strategy.
