When Rachael Harrison graduated with a Bachelor of Business (International Tourism) in 2021, the tourism industry was at a standstill due to COVID-19. But ICMS offered her a game-changing opportunity: one more year of study to earn a second degree.
She took it, and in 2022, she graduated again, this time with a Bachelor of Business (Marketing). That decision has been pivotal in her career success.
“I chose Marketing because I felt it was a universal degree that I could take into any job,” Rachael, who is now Account Director at Manly Pacific Hotel, said.
“It’s an extra level of knowledge that I wouldn’t have had, but I’m so glad I chose to do it.
“It has massively helped me in my current role with targeting clients, pushing the hotel digitally, creating collateral, and building exciting partnerships with local companies.”
Growing up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Rachael always had her sights set on something local.
When ICMS visited her high school, Freshwater Senior Campus, for a university open day, Rachael was drawn to the idea of studying travel and hotels.
“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I was interested in travel and hotels,” she said.
“The idea of being able to apply for early entry and potentially be accepted to a uni before doing my HSC was a big win. I gave it a go, and it worked out for me. It took a lot of the pressure off the HSC process for sure.”
Rachael also received an ICMS Professional Scholarship, which further cemented her decision to study at ICMS.
“I definitely would recommend studying at ICMS,” she said.
“It’s a close-knit and more personalised experience than a traditional university.”
Even during COVID, Rachael made meaningful connections.
“I still chat with one of my lecturers, Janene, through my current role. And O-Week was a standout memory, especially the colour run. It was such a great vibe.”
Rachael’s career took off quickly after graduation.
During her studies, she completed her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) industry placement at Intercruises, planning excursions for cruise ships. This experience, combined with her ICMS education, set her up for success.
On the morning of her Marketing graduation, Rachael interviewed for a Sales Executive role at Manly Pacific.
A week later, she got the job. Since then, she’s climbed the ranks to Account Director, earning recognition as a finalist at the NSW Accommodation Awards and the Asia Pacific Hotel Management Awards for Sales Person of the Year.
Her role is fast-paced and varied.
“Every day is different,” Rachael said.
“I focus on driving revenue through account management, group bookings, and conferences. I prepare proposals, negotiate contracts, and mentor the sales team.
“It’s a balance of relationship-building, strategy, and leadership.”
Rachael’s advice is simple: “Take up every experience you can, even if it means working extra hours. Any experience you get will be super valuable in the long run.”
From two degrees in four years to a thriving career, Rachael’s story shows what’s possible with determination and the right support.
