High up in the (Zephyr) Sky

Popping champagne and mixing cocktails in one of Australia's most glamorous rooftop bars is how International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) student Gyobin (Kevin) Lee is gaining valuable experience in the hospitality industry.

As part of his degree's built-in industry training program, Lee is bartending at the famous Zephyr Sky Bar, located on the twelfth floor of the Hyatt Regency Sydney where patrons enjoy sweeping views of the bright city lights and Darling Harbour.

"I hope this experience will enhance my bartending career and will one day help me become a bar manager," Lee, a second year Bachelor of Hospitality Management student, said.

Industry training is a key component of every degree offered by ICMS, located in Northern Beaches, NSW, Sydney. The program enables student to gain valuable, practical experience while studying, and gives ICMS students the edge in the job market over graduates without work experience. This has translated into an impressive 90% graduate employability rate recorded by the career-focused higher education institution.

Lee, from South Korea, hopes his work experience at the Zephyr Bar will lead to work either in Australia or back in his home country after he has finished studying. It is giving him a good idea of what is expected in the hospitality industry, something he said he appreciated.

The industry training itself was a major attraction for Lee to study at ICMS, both for the overseas experience and for the opportunity to earn an income through work experience to help with tuition and living expenses.

ICMS students are paid varying amounts as wages while they complete their industry training, and many students are able to hold part-time jobs while studying.

"This is a really good point for some overseas students who may need extra money to help fund their studies," Lee said.

"ICMS and my work experience at Zephyr is giving me a high level of understanding of cultural differences and helping me improve my English. This will be helpful to my career and my future working performance."
