Using technology to its greatest potential to enhance the learning experience of tertiary students was the focus of International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Deputy Vice Chancellor, Learning and Teaching, Dr Margot McNeill’s presentation at the recent annual Chairs of Academic Boards Forum.
Dr McNeill was a keynote speaker at the event held in Sydney on Thursday, 8 March. The overall theme of the 2018 forum was ‘Embracing the digital future: Ensuring academic quality’. The event was attended by approximately 60 Chairs of the Academic Boards of private higher education providers from across Australia.
The forum is a chance for these academic leaders to come together for updates from the regulator Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and to share practice relating to quality assurance and enhancement.
Dr McNeill’s presentation, Internationalisation and harnessing the power of technology for learning, was on the results of research projects undertaken to fully utilise the power and potential of technologies to enhance student learning.
Some of these projects involved ‘whole-of-college’ transformation initiatives to embed contemporary teaching and promote digital literacies for all students and staff. Other projects focussed on using technologies to address challenges in individual subjects, for example where a technology has been introduced to enable students to practice and gain feedback on a challenging task.
“The results of these projects have been overwhelmingly positive, with students citing increased confidence in their ability to demonstrate their learning, and staff equipped to select curriculum interventions to suit their context,” Dr McNeill said.
“These are exciting opportunities for us here at ICMS. There have already been some positive outcomes from the forum, with participants requesting opportunities to discuss the research further. This positions ICMS at the forefront of innovation in this space.”
