A passion for travel and an interest in the creativity of marketing has led ICMS Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student Isaac Earl to find a career that matches his energetic pace of living life to the full.
Isaac is in his final year of his degree and will graduate in March 2024. He only started studying after travelling the world after leaving school in 2016, having saved through various jobs to travel in 2018 through 32 countries in 11 months. He’s also a marathon runner, trained in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and a football player who thrives on challenges and striking the balance between work and play.
In 2021, Isaac originally started a course in commerce at a Sydney university but was largely unmoved by the curriculum. The only subject he enjoyed – and received high marks for – was marketing.
“I decided to search around for a marketing degree and I found ICMS. The college was also a great recommendation from a family friend. On this basis, I decided to apply for a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and also received a Professional Scholarship from ICMS,” he said.
The ICMS Work Integrated Learning (WIL) professional placements team helped Isaac secure two internships as part of his degree.
WIL subjects are built into every degree at ICMS, designed to enable students to network, gain industry experience, and put real life work experience on their CV before graduating.
Isaac worked in the marketing departments of the Sydney branch of UTracks, a travel company, and then at Lilac and Mila, a fashion outlet specializing in Bohemian-inspired clothing for women.
“UTracks was a great first experience of working in an office environment and in an industry that I’m very passionate about – travel,” Isaac said.
He was given a variety of different tasks, including writing blogs, newsletters, creating social media posts and looking at marketing analytics.
“These all assisted my development and enabled me to use the correct tools to work in the marketing industry. Working at UTracks also gave me the opportunity to work alongside people who had great knowledge about the industry and taught me many tricks of the trade.”
His internship at Lilac and Mila allowed Isaac to gain valuable experience working in an industry outside of his comfort zone.
“This helped me develop the necessary skills to be able to work in a range of different industries as well as focusing on a variety of different target audiences,” he said.
“Both internships have given me valuable experiences and lessons that will help me in my future career in marketing.”
Marketing may well be the most creative aspect of business, an aspect that Isaac particularly enjoyed.
“The best thing about working in the marketing industry is the creativity you can use and putting your own personal touch on campaigns when speaking to the target audience,” Isaac said.
“It is also very rewarding to see the results of your efforts, for example, seeing an increase in bookings or views on the blog you created.”
As part of the ICMS Bachelor of Business (Marketing) degree, alongside core business subjects and marketing-focused subjects, such as Marketing Strategy (MKT301A) and Marketing Analytics and Big Data (MKT302A) are electives such as Blogging Your Way to Fame (BUS302A) and Guerilla Marketing (ENT203A).
It all adds up to a well-rounded business degree that will give students the edge in the dynamic marketing industry.
